On
Monday, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) signed a new protocol
with Turkish Airlines, Türkiye’s national flag carrier, and its low-cost
subsidiary AJet. The agreement is part of the "Island Cyprus
Project," which aims to make air travel to the TRNC more accessible and
affordable.
The
signing ceremony took place at the Presidential Palace in Lefkosa and was
attended by TRNC President Ersin Tatar, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, Turkish
Airlines Chairman of the Board and Executive Committee Ahmet Bolat, as well as
other high-ranking officials.
The
protocol is designed to ease travel to the TRNC by stabilizing and lowering
ticket prices, while also encouraging an increase in tourist arrivals. As part
of the agreement, AJet will operate shuttle flights between Ercan Airport in
Northern Cyprus and key cities in Türkiye.
A
maximum ticket price of 6,000 Turkish liras (approximately $150) has been set
for flights between Türkiye and the TRNC.
In
addition, following a promotional event scheduled for 26 July in London,
round-trip fares between London Stansted and Ercan Airport will be offered at a
fixed rate of €250 (around $293).
Speaking
at the ceremony, TRNC President Ersin Tatar emphasized the importance of the
agreement for the local economy:
"These
steps will significantly enhance the competitiveness of our tourism sector and
support its growth."
