British Airways Celebrates 80 Years of US Service with Major Lounge Investment

British Airways is celebrating 80 years of flights between the United Kingdom and the United States, marking a milestone that began with its inaugural London–New York service in 1946. As part of the anniversary, the airline has announced a major investment programme for its airport lounges in the US, including a complete redevelopment of its facility at Newark Liberty International Airport and further upgrades planned for Boston and San Francisco.

Eight decades of transatlantic growth

The first commercial landplane service operated by British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) arrived in New York's LaGuardia Airport on 1 July 1946 after a journey of nearly 20 hours with stops in Shannon and Gander. Operated by a Lockheed Constellation 049, the flight marked the beginning of what has become one of the world's largest transatlantic networks.

Today, New York remains at the heart of British Airways' US operations. The airline now serves 27 destinations across the United States and, during the current summer season, will operate more than 20,500 flights to and from the country, maintaining its position as the European carrier with the largest US network.

"Reaching 80 years of flying to the United States is a truly proud moment for British Airways. From our very first flight between London and New York to the comprehensive network we operate today, our commitment to connecting people, cultures and commerce across the Atlantic has never been stronger.

"This year is especially significant as the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary and plays host to a global football spectacle. We are proud to be bringing fans and travelers together for these historic moments, while continuing to invest in our customer experience to shape the future of transatlantic travel," said Sean Doyle, Chairman and CEO of British Airways.

Investment in lounges across the United States

The airline will invest 15 million US dollars in a complete redevelopment of its lounge at Newark Liberty International Airport. Designed in partnership with architecture and design firm Gensler, the new facility will feature a full-service bar, upgraded dining areas, an enhanced Concorde dining space, refurbished shower facilities and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the runway. The interior design will draw inspiration from New Jersey's coastline and industrial heritage while incorporating locally sourced materials and furnishings.

Construction is expected to begin later this year, with the renovated lounge scheduled to reopen in 2027.

British Airways has also confirmed plans to upgrade its lounges in Boston and San Francisco during 2027 as part of a wider investment programme covering London Heathrow and other locations across its global network.

Continuing investment in the customer journey

The lounge projects form part of British Airways' broader multi-billion-dollar transformation programme. Current initiatives include the rollout of high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi across the fleet, improvements in operational performance through new technology, and the introduction of a redesigned First cabin offering greater privacy and comfort for premium travellers.
