One of the ancient world's most celebrated oracle
sanctuaries is welcoming visitors after sunset. As part of Türkiye's Night
Museum Programme, the Temple of Apollo in the Aegean resort town of Didim now
remains open on summer evenings, allowing travellers to explore its illuminated
ruins in cooler temperatures while discovering one of antiquity's most
significant religious sites.
A sanctuary with 2,500 years of history
Dating back to the 7th century BC, the Temple of
Apollo was one of the most influential oracle centres of the ancient world.
Built in the Ionic architectural style, it was regarded as the second most
important oracle sanctuary after the Oracle of Delphi in ancient Greece and is
considered the third-largest temple of the ancient Greek world.
Located in the heart of present-day Didim, the
archaeological site has been the subject of excavation and restoration work
since 1905. Since 2024, conservation efforts have been overseen by the Milet
Museum Directorate.
Exploring the temple after sunset
The Temple of Apollo joined Türkiye's Night Museum
Programme last year as part of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's Legacy for
the Future initiative.
From 1 June to 1 October, visitors can explore the
site daily between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm. The extended opening hours provide an
attractive alternative for holidaymakers who spend the hottest part of the day
on the nearby beaches before visiting one of the region's most important
archaeological attractions in the evening.
Illuminated after dark, the monumental sanctuary
reveals the impressive scale of the ancient complex. Originally, 112 columns
surrounded the sacred inner court, or naos, while several surviving columns
still rise to approximately 17.5 metres.
Among the temple's most striking features are the
carved reliefs of Medusa, the snake-haired figure from Greek mythology whose
gaze was believed to turn people to stone. Under carefully designed evening
lighting, the sculptures take on an especially dramatic appearance.
Centre of prophecy in the ancient world
Dedicated to Apollo, the Greek god of music, poetry,
the arts and prophecy, the sanctuary attracted rulers and pilgrims from across
the ancient world who sought guidance from its famous oracle.
Acting Milet Museum Director Arife Aslan said the
Temple of Apollo became one of antiquity's most influential religious centres.
"After the Temple of Delphi in Greece, it was the
most famous oracle sanctuary of its era," Aslan said. "It received
support from kingdoms and attracted large numbers of visitors. That is one of
the main reasons its reputation endured for centuries."
A different atmosphere after dark
According to Aslan, the evening opening hours have
already increased both visitor numbers and the site's popularity.
"This is already one of the most visited
archaeological sites in Aydin Province during the day," she said. "We
launched the nighttime programme last year, and it has increased both visitor
numbers and the site's popularity."
She added that exploring the monument in the evening
offers a completely different experience.
"Rather than exploring the temple in the midday
heat, visitors can experience it under carefully designed lighting in the
evening. The night has its own mystery, and that creates a completely different
atmosphere."
