Deutsche Bank is strengthening its commitment to more
sustainable business travel by investing in the use of Sustainable Aviation
Fuel (SAF) through an expanded partnership with Lufthansa Group. The agreement
covers the deployment of approximately 1,600 metric tonnes of SAF, resulting in
an estimated reduction of around 5,500 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions compared
with conventional kerosene.
The investment marks another milestone in the growing
collaboration between the two companies, which was extended in October 2025
when Deutsche Bank became the issuer of the Lufthansa Miles & More Credit
Card. Both partners now aim to deepen their cooperation in sustainability while
supporting the broader transformation of aviation through greater acceptance
and use of lower-emission fuels.
SAF supports lower-emission business travel
According to Lufthansa Group, the agreed volume of
Sustainable Aviation Fuel delivers a CO₂ saving comparable to the emissions
generated by approximately 520 Airbus A320neo flights between Frankfurt and
London.
The initiative forms part of Deutsche Bank's strategy
to reduce the environmental impact of its business travel while supporting the
expansion of SAF production through long-term market demand.
"Deutsche Bank's decision to support the
deployment of SAF with Lufthansa Group at this scale is a compelling
demonstration that more sustainable flying is becoming increasingly important
in the business travel sector. We are delighted to set a milestone together
with Deutsche Bank – and to show that companies can make a measurable
contribution to reducing the climate impact of their travel activities through
concrete investments in SAF," said Frank Naeve, Senior Vice President
Global Sales and Distribution at Lufthansa Group.
Jörg Eigendorf, Chief Sustainability Officer of
Deutsche Bank, added: "Sustainable Aviation Fuel is an important
instrument for Deutsche Bank in our efforts to nearly halve our CO₂ emissions
along our supply chain by 2030 compared with 2019. It is also important for us
to send a signal: only if there is reliable demand will SAF producers invest in
production and make alternative fuels more competitive. This is a key part of
our overall approach: we want to reduce CO₂ emissions from our business travel
and offset the remaining emissions where feasible."
Lufthansa expands sustainability solutions for
corporate customers
Lufthansa Group has continued to broaden its portfolio
of sustainability products for corporate clients. Through SAF bulk agreements,
companies can purchase larger volumes of Sustainable Aviation Fuel and receive
Scope 3 certificates documenting the associated CO₂ savings in accordance with
the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
The airline group also offers its Sustainable
Corporate Value Fare, enabling business customers to contribute to reducing
future flight-related CO₂ emissions by up to 30 percent through the use of SAF.
Logistics companies can participate through Lufthansa Cargo's dedicated SAF
programme.
In 2025, around 1,700 companies worldwide invested in
Sustainable Aviation Fuel through Lufthansa Group's corporate products,
reflecting growing interest in lower-emission travel solutions.
Demand for sustainable travel continues to grow
Lufthansa Group reports increasing demand from both
business and leisure travellers for more sustainable travel options. During
2025, more than five percent of passengers chose products designed to reduce
the environmental impact of their journeys, including Green Fares. Over the
same period, sales of Sustainable Aviation Fuel more than doubled across the
airline group's various customer offerings.
The company regards customer participation as one of
the key pillars of its sustainability strategy, alongside fleet modernisation,
continuous improvements in operational fuel efficiency, increased deployment of
Sustainable Aviation Fuel, the expansion of intermodal transport solutions and
long-standing support for international climate and weather research.
