Thailand
has officially launched the “Sawasdee Nihao” tourism initiative, a landmark
celebration marking 50 years of diplomatic relations between Thailand and
China. Spearheaded by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the campaign is
a strategic move to strengthen bilateral ties, elevate Thailand’s tourism image
in the Chinese market, and align with evolving Chinese travel preferences.
Prime
Minister H.E. Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra described the initiative as “the
beginning of a deeper Thai–Chinese partnership,” highlighting tourism as a
longstanding bridge of warmth and friendship between the two nations. “Today,
China and Thailand come together as one close and warm family – ‘中泰一家亲’
(Zhōng Tài yī jiā qīn),” she stated.
A
Flagship Initiative Under ‘Amazing Thailand 2025’
“Sawasdee
Nihao” is one of five core initiatives under the Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism
and Sports Year 2025 programme. It reflects the country’s shift towards quality
tourism through seamless experiences, infrastructure development, and campaigns
such as “5 Must Do in Thailand,” targeting leisure, luxury, wellness, sports,
and multi-generational travellers.
Thailand
is also positioning itself as a hub for global events—from sports and festivals
to cultural showcases—leveraging its soft power to deliver immersive and
high-value tourism. All efforts align with the Sustainable Tourism Goals,
ensuring balanced economic growth, environmental care, and cultural inclusion.
Strategic
Programming and Market Engagement
The
launch day on 29 May in Bangkok included a full suite of strategic events:
·
B2B Table Top Sale: Matched 300
Chinese tour operators with 500 Thai tourism businesses
·
Tourism Forum: Featured keynotes from
top Thai and Chinese officials, reinforcing Thailand’s identity as a “Quality
Destination”
·
Welcome Reception: Celebrated Thai
culture and bilateral goodwill through cuisine and performance
From
30–31 May, Chinese tour operators, media, and KOLs (key opinion leaders) are
participating in a Familiarisation Trip covering destinations such as Bangkok,
Pattaya, Rayong, Nakhon Pathom, and Ayutthaya, with a focus on sustainability
and Thai soft power.
In
parallel, a Celebrity Marketing Campaign features leading Chinese influencers
producing short-form videos highlighting Thailand’s safety, readiness, and
charm—shared across major Chinese media to drive new demand.
A
Vision for Long-Term, High-Impact Tourism
Tourism
and Sports Minister Mr. Sorawong Thienthong emphasized the government’s “Value
over Volume” strategy, aimed at deepening trust and building a resilient
tourism ecosystem. “Sawasdee Nihao is not only a celebration of five decades of
friendship—it’s a launchpad for sustainable, high-impact tourism between our
nations,” he said.
TAT
Governor Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool added that new promotional efforts like Thailand
Summer Blast, Trusted Thailand, and the Nihao Alert app are being rolled out to
increase connectivity, safety, and real-time support for Chinese travellers.
Charter flights from major Chinese cities and airline-OTA collaborations are
expected to accelerate demand.
Chinese
Market Remains Strongest
In
2024, Chinese travellers remained Thailand’s top source market, with over 6.7
million arrivals following the implementation of mutual visa exemption on 1
March 2024. In the first five months of 2025 alone, 1.9 million Chinese
visitors have arrived—surpassing all other international markets.
With
“Sawasdee Nihao,” Thailand sends a clear message: it is ready to welcome
Chinese travellers with open arms, cultural warmth, and world-class experiences
for the next 50 years—and beyond.
