Cunard marked a rare and symbolic moment in maritime
history on 2 February 2026 as its flagship, the Queen Mary 2, anchored off the
coast of Long Beach to reunite with her legendary namesake, the historic Queen
Mary. The encounter, the first of its kind in two decades, took place during
Queen Mary 2’s 2026 World Voyage and brought together two icons that represent
different eras of ocean travel.
A meeting of past and present
Renowned for her transatlantic crossings between New
York and Southampton, Queen Mary 2 remains the world’s only true ocean liner
and the flagship of Cunard. She entered service more than 35 years after the
original Queen Mary was retired in 1967. Launched in 1936, the Queen Mary is
now celebrating her 90th anniversary and continues to be one of the most
recognisable ships in the world, celebrated for her Art Deco design and her
role in maritime history. Today, she operates as a cultural landmark in Long Beach,
offering dining, exhibitions, guided tours, festivals, and overnight
accommodation.
A lasting connection across generations
The reunion carried additional historical resonance
through a unique detail on board Queen Mary 2. Her starboard funnel still
houses a fully refurbished whistle originally taken from the first Queen Mary,
symbolising a direct and enduring link between generations of Cunard ships.
“This iconic rendezvous pays a powerful tribute to
Cunard’s enduring legacy and the spirit of ocean travel,” said Katie McAlister,
President of Cunard. “Queen Mary 2’s reunion with the original Queen Mary for
the first time in 20 years reflects our past, present and future, reminding us
of Cunard’s distinct connection to maritime history and the generations brought
together through timeless elegance, innovation and one-of-a-kind journeys
around the world.”
Steve Caloca, Managing Director of the Queen Mary,
described the moment as exceptional for the city and the ship. “Welcoming Queen
Mary 2 to Long Beach during our 90th anniversary year is an extraordinary
honor, and watching the rendezvous this morning was a once-in-a-generation
sight. This historic moment reflects the enduring bond between the Queen Mary’s
past and present and her continued role as a living symbol of ocean travel,
innovation, and preservation.”
Milestones on a global voyage
The Long Beach rendezvous followed another milestone
in Queen Mary 2’s career: her first-ever transit of the Panama Canal. After the
meeting, the ship made her official return to the Port of Los Angeles after 17
years, docking overnight as part of the world cruise itinerary.
Queen Mary 2’s current 108-night World Voyage, her
first in two years, is taking guests to more than 30 ports across the Americas,
Australia, Asia, Africa, and Europe. The itinerary includes overnight stays in
destinations such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sydney, Hong Kong, Singapore,
and Cape Town, allowing extended time ashore in major global cities.
A living symbol of ocean travel
With the reunion of the two Queens, Cunard underscored
its long-standing connection to maritime heritage while showcasing the
continued relevance of ocean liner travel. The rare meeting off Long Beach
served not only as a visual spectacle but also as a reminder of Cunard’s unique
role in linking the golden age of transatlantic travel with contemporary,
globe-spanning voyages.
