Boeing and Air India announced the new order on 29 January 2026 at the Wings Airshow in Hyderabad. The purchase comprises 20 Boeing 737-8 and 10 Boeing 737-10 aircraft, increasing Air India’s total Boeing order book to nearly 200 airplanes across single-aisle and widebody families. The deal reflects the airline’s response to rising passenger demand and its focus on fuel efficiency and operational flexibility.

Options exercised to support network expansion

The airline finalised the incremental purchase of 20 737-8 jets earlier this month, while the order for 10 737-10 aircraft had previously been listed as unidentified on Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries website. Both transactions stem from existing options and align with Air India’s plans to expand its route network and steadily upgrade its fleet over the coming years.

“This additional order for 30 Boeing 737 aircraft is part of our broader fleet strategy to position Air India firmly for the future, as a world-class global carrier that India deserves and the world expects,” said Campbell Wilson, CEO and Managing Director of Air India. He noted that the order builds on the airline’s major fleet commitments announced in 2023 and supports planned deliveries and renewals in the near term.

Focus on efficiency and capacity

Air India intends to deploy the 737-8 on high-frequency domestic and short-haul regional routes, benefiting from the aircraft’s fuel efficiency, dispatch reliability and range flexibility. The larger 737-10 will allow the airline to increase capacity while maintaining fleet commonality and achieving the lowest cost per seat within the single-aisle segment.

“Air India’s order for more 737 MAX jets underscores the strong performance of their existing 737-8 fleet as they continue to expand connectivity across India and South Asia,” said Paul Righi, Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Eurasia, India and South Asia at Boeing. He added that the confidence placed in both the 737-8 and 737-10 highlights their role as a cornerstone of Air India’s single-aisle growth strategy.

Strong long-term outlook for India and South Asia

The order comes against the backdrop of sustained growth in the region’s aviation market. According to Boeing’s Commercial Market Outlook, India and South Asia will require nearly 3,300 new aircraft over the next 20 years, with around 90 percent of demand concentrated in single-aisle jets such as the 737 MAX.

With this latest investment, Air India continues to position itself for long-term growth, combining modern aircraft technology with an expanding network to meet the expectations of one of the world’s fastest-growing air travel markets.
