The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is elevating
the Sakon Nakhon Christmas Star Parade to international prominence, positioning
the festival as a globally relevant cultural event. Taking place from 20 to 24
December 2025 in Tha Rae Municipality, Sakon Nakhon, the five-day celebration
features expanded programming, enhanced storytelling, and immersive lighting
and drone displays designed to deepen visitor engagement while delivering
sustainable economic benefits to local communities.
Celebrated for more than a century, the Christmas Star
Parade is one of Northeastern Thailand’s most distinctive cultural traditions
and among the country’s most prominent Christian celebrations. Inspired by the
Star of Bethlehem that guided the birth of Jesus Christ, the parade has evolved
into a living expression of spiritual devotion, artistic craftsmanship, and
collective community identity.
A living heritage with global resonance
Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of TAT,
highlighted the significance of the festival’s transformation: “The Christmas
Star Parade reflects the enduring spirit and creativity of the Tha Rae
community. By elevating its storytelling and visitor experiences, we aim to
introduce this remarkable tradition to wider international audiences while
ensuring that local communities benefit meaningfully from tourism. With its
strong cultural roots and contemporary creative appeal, the festival has the
potential to stand alongside Thailand’s most iconic cultural events on the
global stage.”
For the 2025 edition, TAT has introduced contemporary
creative elements that enhance the festival’s spiritual foundations while
strengthening its international appeal. Immersive lighting installations
illuminate key heritage landmarks, including the Cathedral of St Michael the
Archangel and Tha Rae’s century-old stone houses, reinforcing the area’s
distinctive historical character.
Five days of immersive experiences
Across the five-day programme, visitors can explore
AI-powered photo spots, participate in sustainability-focused creative
workshops, enjoy a family-friendly snow experience, and discover Amazing
Thailand–branded illuminated star vehicles. Hands-on activities such as cupcake
decoration, star ornament crafting, and recycled-material jewellery workshops
invite active participation while reinforcing community engagement and
responsible event practices.
From 20 to 22 December, as well as during daytime
activities on 23 December, festival life unfolds along the walking street and
Martino Pavilion, creating a continuous, community-led celebration that blends
culture, heritage, and festive atmosphere. Activities begin at 14.00 on 20
December, and from 10.00 on 21, 22, and 23 December. Visitors can browse
locally made products and indigo textiles, sample regional cuisine, and join
heritage walks through the historic Christian quarter.
Evenings are animated by creative showcases and
performances from local musicians, schools, and youth groups, with variety
music programmes starting from 19.00. A key visual highlight takes place on 22
December, when large illuminated star vehicles are showcased publicly along
Ratcharoen Road from 17.00. Programmes from 20 to 23 December run until 22.30.
The illuminated star procession and Christmas Eve
traditions
The central highlight of the festival takes place on
the evening of 23 December. Float registration begins at 15.00, followed by
formation from 16.00 at the Martino Pavilion. At 18.00, the illuminated star
procession sets off, with ornate star vehicles parading along the designated
route before returning at 20.00. The evening continues with Christmas
performances by local schools and community groups, culminating in the official
opening ceremony at 20.30. The programme includes Christmas blessings, a festive
candy shower, gift-giving, a sacred nativity drama, awards for the best
illuminated star floats, variety music performances, and TAT’s signature drone
light show.
On 24 December, the festival transitions into a more
traditional and sacred Christmas Eve observance. The handheld star procession
gathers at 18.00 at the Martino Pavilion and departs at 18.30 for a full
circuit around the Cathedral of St Michael the Archangel before entering the
church. The evening continues with Christmas Mass, followed by a nativity
performance by local youth at the Grotto of the Infant Jesus, concluding after
the completion of religious services.
Strengthening Thailand’s cultural portfolio
By positioning the Sakon Nakhon Christmas Star Parade
within Thailand’s growing portfolio of culturally distinctive festivals, TAT
aims to enhance global awareness of the country’s diverse cultural landscape.
This initiative builds on the international recognition of “Songkran in
Thailand” as a UNESCO-listed cultural heritage and the rising global appeal of
“Loi Krathong” as one of Asia’s most captivating light festivals, reinforcing
Thailand’s commitment to sharing community-rooted cultural experiences with the
world in meaningful and memorable ways.
