Phuket to Host Global Wellness Summit as Thailand Expands Health Tourism Strategy

Thailand is preparing to strengthen its position in international wellness tourism as Phuket hosts the Global Wellness Summit 2026 from 10 to 13 November. The four-day event will bring together approximately 600 delegates from the wellness, healthcare, tourism and investment sectors. For the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), which is participating as a co-host, the summit provides an opportunity to introduce international industry partners to the country's traditional healing practices and expanding range of wellness experiences.

Organised by Thailand's Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine (DTAM), the summit will take place at Angsana Laguna Phuket under the theme "The Science, Art & Soul of Wellness". Other co-hosts include the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) and Phuket Province. Participants are expected to include business leaders, investors, medical professionals, researchers and entrepreneurs working across the international wellness economy.

The event forms part of Thailand's wider strategy to attract travellers seeking experiences that combine health, relaxation and cultural engagement. Under the promotional concept "Healing is the New Luxury", TAT is placing greater emphasis on the quality and value of tourism rather than visitor numbers alone. Traditional Thai massage, herbal medicine, regional cuisine and nature-based experiences are central to this approach, alongside modern wellness facilities and internationally recognised hospitality services.

International Industry Leaders Gather in Phuket

The summit officially opens on 11 November, when Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana is scheduled to preside over the opening ceremony and deliver an address. Welcome activities and receptions for delegates will begin the previous day.

The programme includes keynote presentations, panel discussions, roundtables and networking events examining developments across the global wellness industry. Innovation will be another major focus, with presentations of new products, services and technologies.

On 12 November, a student-oriented "Shark Tank of Wellness" competition will provide a platform for emerging ideas, alongside an Innovation Lab and an evening gala. Further discussions and industry presentations are scheduled for 13 November, when the organisers will also announce the host destination for the 2027 summit.

For Phuket, the event represents an opportunity to demonstrate its capabilities beyond conventional beach tourism. The island already has an established hospitality industry, with spa resorts, wellness facilities and nature-based activities forming part of its tourism offering.

The gathering also strengthens Phuket's profile as a destination for international conferences and professional events, bringing together the wellness and meetings industries.

Traditional Healing Meets Modern Wellness Services

TAT will use the summit to present a nationwide collection of wellness experiences under the title "Thailand Wellness Journey: The Ultimate Healing Sanctuary".

A dedicated exhibition will introduce wellness routes across Thailand's five regions, combining traditional medicine, massage, local food, cultural heritage and natural environments. The objective is to demonstrate that wellness tourism can extend beyond individual spa treatments to become an integral part of a longer journey through the country.

Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of TAT, emphasised the importance of connecting Thailand's cultural traditions with international demand.

"Thai wellness combines traditional healing knowledge, nature, cuisine, culture and the genuine care of Thai hospitality," she said.

According to Kiatphaibool, the summit is intended to create business opportunities for Thai operators and local communities while expanding international awareness of the country's wellness offerings.

Several public and private organisations will contribute to the exhibition programme. DTAM will introduce regional massage traditions, herbal products and food-related wellness practices, while TCEB will highlight Thailand's capacity to host international meetings and events.

The Sustainable Tourism Development Foundation will present aspects of Phuket's cultural heritage and local crafts.

Commercial exhibitors will include Amathopia, focusing on food innovation, and Laguna, presenting spa experiences. BDMS Wellness Clinic and Chiva-Som will showcase developments in wellness services, while the Government Pharmaceutical Organization and research institutions will introduce healthcare products and related technologies.

The range of participants reflects Thailand's efforts to connect traditional wellness practices with contemporary healthcare, hospitality and research.

Wellness Tourism as a Higher-Value Market

The Global Wellness Summit also supports a broader shift in Thailand's tourism development priorities.

Through its "Value over Volume" approach, TAT aims to encourage travel experiences that generate greater economic benefits while maintaining service quality and strengthening connections with local communities.

Wellness tourism is particularly relevant to this strategy because it can combine accommodation, specialist services, gastronomy, cultural activities and nature-based experiences within a single itinerary.

For international tour operators and travel advisors, this creates opportunities to develop programmes that go beyond conventional beach holidays or short spa stays. Regional wellness journeys could incorporate traditional massage, local cuisine, cultural activities and visits to natural attractions, depending on the destination and the traveller's interests.

Thailand's established tourism infrastructure provides a foundation for developing such products, while the involvement of medical and wellness specialists offers opportunities for more specialised services.

However, the distinction between general wellness experiences and medical treatment remains important. The summit brings together both sectors, but individual travel products will require appropriate professional standards and clearly defined services.

Beyond the event itself, TAT intends to strengthen cooperation between Thai wellness operators and international partners. This includes developing market connections and encouraging travel programmes that integrate health and wellbeing with gastronomy, culture and community-based tourism.

The initiative is aligned with the authority's "Transform Together" approach for 2027, which emphasises cooperation between public institutions and private businesses.

By hosting the Global Wellness Summit, Thailand is seeking to reinforce its international position in a sector that extends well beyond traditional spa tourism. The event will provide a platform for presenting existing capabilities, discussing emerging industry trends and establishing partnerships that could support the development of wellness travel across the country.
