Lufthansa has launched a new nonstop service between Frankfurt and Kuala Lumpur, expanding its Southeast Asian network and restoring a direct connection between Germany’s largest aviation hub and the Malaysian capital. The year-round route initially operates five times a week using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner with 287 seats across three travel classes. The aircraft features Lufthansa’s latest Allegris cabin concept, bringing the airline’s updated long-haul product to the Malaysian market.
The new connection gives travellers from Germany and other European countries direct access to Kuala Lumpur, while passengers departing Malaysia can use Frankfurt as a gateway to destinations throughout Europe and beyond. The flight schedules have been coordinated with Lufthansa’s wider network, allowing onward connections to North America and other international markets.
Kuala Lumpur becomes Lufthansa’s fourth destination in Southeast Asia, joining Bangkok, Singapore and Phuket. The expansion strengthens the airline’s position in a region that is important for both tourism and international business. Malaysia’s cultural diversity, tropical landscapes and established tourism infrastructure make it an attractive destination for European leisure travellers, while the country’s economic links with Germany support demand for business travel.
Overnight flights and connections via Frankfurt
The new service operates in both directions with overnight schedules designed to facilitate onward travel.
Flight LH705 departs Kuala Lumpur at 11:55 p.m. and arrives in Frankfurt at 6:00 a.m. the following morning. In the opposite direction, LH704 leaves Frankfurt at 9:30 p.m. and reaches Kuala Lumpur at 4:40 p.m. the next day.
The morning arrival in Frankfurt allows passengers from Malaysia to connect with Lufthansa’s European and intercontinental services. Travellers departing Germany arrive in Kuala Lumpur during the afternoon, providing access to onward domestic flights and ground transport connections.
Frank Naeve, Lufthansa Group Senior Vice President Global Sales, described the route as an important development for the airline’s presence in Malaysia.
“With the launch of our nonstop service between Kuala Lumpur and Frankfurt, we are strengthening the connection between Malaysia and Europe while bringing our latest long-haul aircraft and Allegris travel experience to the market.”
The route also expands Lufthansa’s long-haul offering from Frankfurt during the winter 2026 schedule, when the airline is introducing its Allegris product on additional services from Frankfurt and Munich.
Dreamliner introduces Allegris to Malaysia
The Kuala Lumpur route is operated by the Boeing 787-9, one of the newer aircraft types in Lufthansa’s long-haul fleet. Compared with previous generations of widebody aircraft, the Dreamliner incorporates updated engines and aerodynamic technology designed to improve operating efficiency.
The aircraft accommodates 287 passengers in three travel classes and is equipped with Lufthansa Allegris, the airline’s redesigned long-haul cabin product.
Allegris introduces updated seating concepts and greater personalisation across the cabin, forming part of Lufthansa’s broader investment in its premium passenger experience.
For the travel trade, the combination of nonstop flights and an updated onboard product provides an additional option for selling Malaysia as a long-haul destination. The route can support both city stays in Kuala Lumpur and itineraries combining the capital with other regions of the country.
Malaysia targets stronger European tourism links
The launch comes as Malaysia continues to promote itself internationally through its Visit Malaysia 2026–2027 campaign. According to figures cited in Lufthansa’s announcement, the country welcomed 42.2 million visitors in 2025, including international arrivals across different visitor categories.
Germany is also an important economic partner for Malaysia. More than 700 German companies operate in the country, while Germany is described as Malaysia’s largest trading partner within the European Union.
Malaysia’s Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, welcomed the additional air connection as an opportunity to strengthen tourism and economic relations.
“This direct connection provides greater convenience for travellers from Germany and across Europe, while supporting our efforts to attract high-value visitors and showcase Malaysia’s diverse attractions, rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality.”
For Malaysia’s tourism industry, direct access from Frankfurt is particularly relevant because the airport serves not only the German market but also travellers connecting from numerous European cities.
Kuala Lumpur is also an important starting point for travel throughout Peninsular Malaysia and to destinations in Sabah and Sarawak on the island of Borneo. The new service therefore offers opportunities for tour operators to develop itineraries combining urban experiences, cultural attractions, beach holidays and nature tourism.
With five weekly departures and a year-round operating schedule, Lufthansa is adding regular capacity between Europe and Malaysia. The commercial impact will depend on passenger demand and the development of connecting traffic, but the new route provides a further distribution and transport option for European travel companies selling Southeast Asia.
