The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is expanding its efforts to promote lesser-known destinations in Southern Thailand to the European travel industry. Through its The Link Plus initiative, TAT Frankfurt brought ten tour operator representatives from Germany, Austria and Switzerland to the provinces of Nakhon Si Thammarat and Surat Thani for an eight-day familiarisation trip from 9 to 16 October 2026.
The programme focused on Khanom and Sichon, two coastal destinations in Nakhon Si Thammarat, alongside Khao Sok National Park and Cheow Lan Lake in neighbouring Surat Thani. By connecting beach destinations with rainforest landscapes, floating accommodation and cultural attractions, TAT aims to encourage the development of multi-destination itineraries that extend beyond Thailand's established tourism centres.
The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to distribute international tourism more widely across the country. Rather than concentrating additional visitors in already popular destinations, TAT is working with European travel companies and local tourism businesses to develop commercially viable products in emerging regions. The familiarisation trip included destination visits, accommodation inspections, community experiences and direct meetings with local hotel operators.
Coastal Villages, Rainforests and Floating Accommodation
Khanom and Sichon offer a different perspective on Southern Thailand from the country's better-known resort destinations. Located along the Gulf of Thailand, the two areas combine coastal scenery with local communities and opportunities for nature-based and cultural tourism.
During the familiarisation trip, participants explored local attractions and accommodation options before continuing to Khao Sok and Cheow Lan Lake in Surat Thani. The latter is particularly known for its dramatic limestone formations, rainforest surroundings and floating accommodation, which allow visitors to stay directly on the water.
The itinerary also included community-based tourism experiences in Tha Kham and Phrom Lok, introducing participants to local traditions and everyday life. In Nakhon Si Thammarat city, the delegation visited cultural attractions including Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, which TAT identifies as Thailand's ninth UNESCO World Heritage property.
The combination of these destinations offers opportunities to develop itineraries that balance coastal holidays with nature exploration and cultural encounters. It also allows tour operators to introduce less familiar regions without requiring travellers to abandon the established attractions of Southern Thailand.
Seasonality is another important consideration. According to TAT, Khanom and Sichon are particularly suitable for visits between February and September, while Khao Sok and Cheow Lan Lake offer nature experiences throughout the year. Combining these destinations could therefore help operators develop programmes across different travel periods.
Direct Business Contacts with Local Hotels
An important commercial component of the programme was the Khanom–Sichon Trade Meet on 11 October 2026. The event brought the European delegation together with representatives of 14 local hotel businesses to discuss potential partnerships and the development of new tourism products.
For the participating tour operators, these meetings provided an opportunity to establish direct contacts with accommodation providers in destinations that are not yet widely represented in European travel programmes.
TAT Frankfurt also presented a German-language promotional video and brochure introducing Khanom and Sichon. The materials are intended to support destination awareness and provide travel professionals with information for product development and customer consultation.
Suladda Sarutilavan, Executive Director Europe Region at TAT, explained the strategic objectives of the initiative:
“The next chapter of Thai tourism is about creating greater value across more destinations, communities and seasons. Through The Link Plus, we are bringing international travel partners closer to local businesses and experiences, turning lesser-known destinations into viable travel products. Our goal is to create a more connected tourism landscape where growth reaches beyond established centres and benefits local economies.”
The approach reflects a growing emphasis on connecting international distribution networks with smaller tourism businesses and communities, allowing more destinations to participate in Thailand's international tourism economy.
Germany Remains a Key Source Market
The Link Plus programme is aligned with TAT Frankfurt's marketing strategy for 2027, which focuses on high-potential regional markets and selected traveller segments.
Priority groups include Millennials, dual-income couples without children, first-time visitors and returning Thailand travellers. Families are identified as a secondary target market. Khanom and Sichon will be promoted alongside established beach and nature destinations, with particular emphasis on coastal holidays, wellness, cultural experiences and local encounters.
Germany provides an important foundation for this strategy. According to TAT, Thailand recorded 640,674 arrivals from Germany between 1 January and 30 September 2026. German visitors stayed an average of 15.58 days and spent approximately 58,814 baht per trip.
These relatively long stays create opportunities for itineraries combining several regions rather than focusing exclusively on a single resort destination. For European tour operators, the combination of Khanom, Sichon, Khao Sok and Cheow Lan Lake could provide an additional option for travellers seeking a more varied experience of Southern Thailand.
The familiarisation trip represents an initial step in connecting these destinations with the German-speaking travel trade. Whether the programme results in new bookable itineraries will depend on the commercial partnerships established and the ability of local suppliers to meet the requirements of international tour operators.
