TUI River Cruises is entering the growing market for sports-themed travel with its first river cruise built around a major motor racing event. The new From River to Racetrack itinerary combines a seven-night Danube voyage aboard TUI Maya with attendance at the 2027 Hungarian Grand Prix. Departing on 26 July and returning on 2 August, the cruise includes tickets for all three days of the race weekend, together with organised transfers between the ship and the Hungaroring circuit.
The itinerary takes passengers to Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest, combining traditional European river cruising with an international sporting event. In Budapest, the vessel will remain during the Grand Prix weekend, allowing guests to attend Friday's practice sessions, Saturday's qualifying and Sunday's race. Seated grandstand access is included, removing the need for passengers to arrange separate race tickets and circuit transportation.
The themed departure went on sale on 26 October 2026, with prices starting at £2,299 per person for a package including flights from London Gatwick. For TUI, the introduction represents an expansion of its river cruise offering beyond conventional sightseeing itineraries. It also reflects the increasing importance of major sporting events as a reason for travellers to choose particular destinations and travel dates.
Three days at the Hungaroring
The Hungarian Grand Prix is the central attraction of the new itinerary. Passengers will have access to the Hungaroring across the three principal days of the race weekend, with grandstand seating and organised transfers included in the holiday package.
Friday is dedicated to practice, followed by qualifying on Saturday and the main race on Sunday. The extended stay in Budapest allows guests to combine the motorsport programme with time in the Hungarian capital.
TUI River Cruises is also planning a guest speaker aboard TUI Maya, who will share insights into motor racing during the voyage. The company has not yet announced the speaker's identity.
Katy Berzins, Head of River Cruise at TUI River Cruises, said the new product responds to changing travel preferences.
“Travel is increasingly being shaped by the experiences people want to have, with major sporting and live events becoming a real reason to visit a destination. Our first ever racing themed cruise taps into that trend, bringing together the excitement of the Hungarian Grand Prix with the ease of a TUI River Cruises holiday.”
The concept allows passengers to attend the race weekend without changing hotels or organising independent transport between Budapest and the circuit.
Vienna and Bratislava complete the itinerary
Beyond the Hungarian Grand Prix, the seven-night cruise includes visits to two other Central European capitals.
Vienna offers opportunities to explore its imperial architecture, historic palaces and cultural attractions. Bratislava provides a contrasting destination, with its compact historic centre and prominent hilltop castle.
Budapest serves as the focal point of the voyage, combining its established appeal as a Danube city-break destination with the international attention generated by the Grand Prix.
The programme is designed to appeal to passengers interested in both cultural sightseeing and motorsport. It may also attract travellers who have not previously considered a river cruise but are interested in attending a major sporting event as part of a broader holiday.
Berzins said the itinerary illustrates how river cruising can accommodate different travel interests while allowing passengers to visit several destinations without repeatedly changing accommodation.
Packages start at £2,299 per person
TUI River Cruises is offering the seven-night From River to Racetrack departure aboard TUI Maya from £2,299 per person, based on two adults sharing a Deck 1 Standard Cabin.
The advertised package includes Full Board Plus accommodation, return TUI Airways flights from London Gatwick to Budapest, 23 kilograms of checked luggage per person, airport transfers, tips and service charges.
A seated grandstand ticket for the Hungarian Grand Prix is included for each passenger, along with organised transfers to the Hungaroring on the selected race days.
The departure is available through TUI's UK distribution channels, including its website, travel agencies and mobile app. The advertised starting price is subject to availability and the applicable booking conditions.
For the travel trade, the new itinerary provides an example of how river cruise operators can combine established European routes with major international events. By incorporating race tickets and transport into a single package, TUI is targeting customers seeking a more structured motorsport holiday alongside a traditional cruise experience.
The July 2027 departure is currently presented as a dedicated themed sailing rather than a wider series of racing cruises. Its introduction nevertheless adds a new product category to TUI River Cruises' programme, linking the appeal of the Danube with one of Europe's prominent annual motorsport events.
