Ryanair and the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) have renewed their partnership for the 2026/27 academic year, continuing a cooperation that has supported international student mobility for a decade. The agreement provides ESN members with a 15% discount on four one-way flights booked through a dedicated platform on Ryanair's website. The initiative is designed to reduce travel costs for students participating in European exchange programmes and encourage travel during their time abroad.
Since the partnership began, Ryanair has carried more than one million Erasmus students across its European network. The airline reports that demand continues to grow, with the number of Erasmus students travelling on its services increasing by 5% over the past year. Spain and Italy remain the leading destinations, together accounting for almost 40% of ESN registrations. The figures highlight the continuing importance of Southern Europe within international student mobility.
The renewed agreement also reflects the broader role of affordable air travel in supporting educational exchanges. Students frequently need to travel between their home countries and host universities, while many also use their exchange periods to explore neighbouring countries and experience different cultures. With more than 235 destinations across Europe, Ryanair offers connections to numerous university cities and tourism destinations, linking student mobility with wider European travel demand.
Ireland and Poland Record Strong Growth
Although Spain and Italy continue to dominate Erasmus destination preferences, Ryanair has reported particularly strong growth in bookings associated with Ireland and Poland.
Erasmus bookings involving Ireland increased by 32%, while Poland recorded a 20% rise. These were the highest growth rates highlighted by the airline in its latest announcement.
The figures suggest that student travel demand is developing beyond the traditionally popular Southern European destinations. However, Ryanair has not published absolute booking volumes for the two markets, making it difficult to assess their relative size within the overall Erasmus travel segment.
For destinations and tourism businesses, international students represent a distinct travel market. Their journeys are closely connected to academic calendars, but their presence abroad can also generate demand for city breaks, cultural attractions and short leisure trips.
The partnership provides an established distribution channel through ESN, which supports international students and facilitates their integration into host communities.
Discount Applies to Four One-Way Flights
Under the renewed agreement, eligible ESN members can receive a 15% reduction on four one-way Ryanair flights during the 2026/27 academic year.
Bookings must be made through the dedicated ESN section of the airline's website. The benefit is specifically linked to ESN membership rather than being a general student fare available to all travellers.
The arrangement is particularly relevant for students who need to organise journeys at the beginning and end of their exchange periods, as well as additional travel during their stay abroad.
Ryanair's extensive point-to-point network also offers opportunities for students to visit other European destinations without necessarily returning through their home countries.
The announcement does not specify additional booking restrictions or detailed eligibility conditions beyond the membership requirement and the use of the dedicated booking platform.
A Decade of Cooperation on Student Mobility
The extension marks the tenth consecutive year of collaboration between Ryanair and ESN. Both organisations describe the partnership as an established means of making international exchanges more accessible.
Marcel Pouchain Meyer, Ryanair's Head of Communications for the DACH region, emphasised the importance of affordable flights for students studying abroad. He pointed to the more than one million Erasmus students carried since the cooperation began and the continued increase in demand.
Maja Gozdowska, Treasurer at ESN International, also highlighted the partnership's contribution to intercultural exchange and the development of young people's skills through international study experiences.
Beyond the immediate fare reductions, the cooperation illustrates the connection between higher education mobility and European tourism. Students travelling abroad often contribute to local visitor economies through accommodation, transport, cultural activities and travel within their host countries.
With the agreement extended for another academic year, Ryanair and ESN are maintaining a travel benefit that has become part of the mobility arrangements available to participating students. The continued growth in Erasmus-related bookings suggests that international student travel remains an important segment of the airline's European passenger business.
