The
festival offers harvest tours, live music, market stalls, and cultural events,
creating an unforgettable experience for visitors.
With
a 3,000-year history of viniculture, Bozcaada is
renowned for its ideal vine-growing conditions. The island's winemaking legacy
is even mentioned in ancient texts like Homer's Iliad and depicted on
Tenedos coins. Bozcaada's unique climate, nourished by northern winds, supports
a variety of grape types, including Papazkarası, Karasakız, and Sauvignon
Blanc.
The
island is especially famous for its endemic grapes—Kuntra and Karalahna for red
wines, and Çavuş and Vasilaki for whites. These grape varieties lend Bozcaada's
wines their distinct flavor and character, making the island a prime
destination for wine lovers.
The
Grape Harvest Festival
The
Bozcaada Grape
Harvesting Festival is a joyous event where locals and visitors come
together to celebrate the harvest. The festival kicks off with a symbolic grape
harvest, where visitors join vineyard owners in gathering grapes. The harvested
grapes are then transported to Bozcaada Square by tractors and horses, keeping
with traditional methods.
Daily
vineyard tours, organized by the Bozcaada Viticulture Cooperative, run from 10
am to 6 pm during the festival. Visitors stroll through vineyards, learning
about the island's grape varieties and winemaking techniques from local
experts. They even get to cut grapes with special knives, experiencing the
ancient art of grape harvesting.
Wine
tastings are a highlight of the festival, offering visitors the chance to savor
Bozcaada's locally produced wines, from crisp whites to bold reds. Each sip
reflects the island's rich soil and Aegean breeze.
Discovering
Bozcaada
Bozcaada's
beauty extends beyond its vineyards. Visitors can explore historical landmarks
such as Bozcaada Castle and the harbor, wander the narrow streets lined with
colorful houses, and visit cultural sites like the Bozcaada Museum and Ayazma
Monastery. The Polente Lighthouse offers a perfect spot for watching the
sunset.
Food
enthusiasts will enjoy the island's culinary delights, from fresh seafood to
lavender ice cream and thyme-infused jams. With its unique blend of history,
culture, and natural beauty, Bozcaada is an enchanting destination, especially
during the harvest season.
Each
September, Bozcaada offers an unforgettable mix of tradition, celebration, and
island charm.
