The upcoming ITB China 2025, set for 27-29 May in Shanghai, will spotlight the dynamic growth of China's travel and outbound market, driven largely by young travelers.
Young Travelers Drive China's Tourism Market in 2025

Chinese millennials and Gen Z are increasingly shaping the travel market, now accounting for nearly half of all outbound tourists. Unlike the older generation, who traveled in tightly managed groups, young Chinese travelers are individualists, making spontaneous travel decisions, often influenced by social media and digital platforms like Xiaohongshu and Douyin. They seek unique experiences, including major international events, and prioritize flexibility, technology, and cultural immersion over budget constraints.

International Events as a Major Draw

Events like Taylor Swift's concerts in Singapore, which saw a 400% increase in hotel bookings from Chinese travelers, highlight the strong influence of pop culture on travel decisions. Major events have become key tourism drivers, with young people willing to pay high travel costs to attend. This trend underscores China’s significant rebound in the international travel market, with outbound trips projected to reach 155 million in 2025 and 200 million by 2028.

Embracing Technology and Flexibility

Digital platforms and AI are indispensable for young Chinese tourists. Apps like DeepSeek and travel tech companies such as Atlas use AI for personalized travel planning and real-time bookings. Mary Li, founder of Atlas, emphasizes that adapting to AI-driven changes is crucial for the travel industry. Low-cost carriers, offering greater flexibility and local experiences, are increasingly popular among younger travelers.

As China’s tourism market evolves, the tech-savvy, experience-driven approach of young travelers is setting new trends, positioning the country as a global leader in travel innovation.
