RIU
Hotels & Resorts has reported a total social investment of €3,171,135 in
2024, marking the first full year of its Proudly Committed strategy. Working
with 88 strategic partners, the company carried out 104 initiatives that
directly benefited 55,624 people and indirectly reached more than 82,000
others.
Childhood
at the heart of investment
Childhood
programs accounted for 71% of RIU’s investment. Key efforts include ongoing
support for childhood cancer research, with nearly €2 million raised since
2014, as well as health initiatives for mothers and children in Latin America
and education projects in Africa.
Protecting
biodiversity worldwide
Biodiversity
received 22% of funding. Projects supported in 2024 included reef restoration,
coastal reforestation, and species protection in Mexico, the Maldives, Costa
Rica, Mauritius, and the Dominican Republic. All initiatives were developed in
partnership with scientific organizations to ensure measurable environmental
impact.
Supporting
local communities
RIU
also invested in training, cultural programs, and development projects in
Africa and Latin America, representing 7% of its 2024 funding. Since 2012, the
company has been a member of ECPAT, where it currently holds Top Member status,
and since 2021 it has partnered with the IUF to promote equality and labor
rights across its teams.
Environmental
achievements
According
to the company’s 2024 Annual Report, RIU reduced its Scope 1 and 2 emissions
per stay by 10% year-on-year, representing a 61% drop compared with 2021.
Currently, 72% of RIU properties hold environmental certifications. Milestones
include achieving zero food waste certification across all hotels in Mallorca
and adopting renewable electricity in 76% of its global portfolio.
