Royal Caribbean International will bring “The
SpongeBob Musical” to sea for the first time when Hero of the Seas enters
service from Miami in August 2027. The new production, inspired by both the
Nickelodeon animated series and the Tony-nominated Broadway musical, will be
staged in the ship’s Royal Theater.
Hero of the Seas will be the fourth ship in Royal
Caribbean’s Icon Class and is being positioned strongly towards the family
market. The SpongeBob production will form part of a wider entertainment
programme spanning theatre and other venues across the ship. Royal Caribbean
says the version developed for Hero will be a newly adapted production rather
than a straightforward transfer of the Broadway show.
The entertainment announcement adds another element to
the product Royal Caribbean is building around its newest ship. Hero will
operate seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries from Miami, with
every sailing calling at Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas. Depending on
the itinerary, additional destinations will include Cozumel in Mexico and
Roatan in Honduras or Charlotte Amalie in St. Thomas and Philipsburg in St.
Maarten.
Broadway moves to the Caribbean
“The SpongeBob Musical” received 12 Tony Award
nominations following its Broadway debut and uses characters and settings from
the long-running animated television series. The story follows SpongeBob and
other residents of Bikini Bottom as they attempt to save their home from
destruction.
For the cruise version, Royal Caribbean plans to
combine the familiar characters and music with production technology designed
for the Royal Theater. The company sees the show as entertainment capable of
appealing to different generations travelling together.
“At Royal Caribbean, we're focused on creating
incredible experiences that bring families of all ages together in meaningful,
memorable ways,” said Christi Coachman, vice president, entertainment, Royal
Caribbean. “Our entertainment lineup on Hero of the Seas is designed with
something for everyone.”
The production also reflects the increasing role of
branded entertainment aboard large cruise ships. Established characters and
stage productions can give cruise lines recognisable content while
differentiating individual ships within increasingly large fleets.
Eight neighbourhoods and nine pools
Entertainment is only one component of the
family-focused product aboard Hero of the Seas. The ship will be organised into
eight neighbourhoods and feature nine pools as well as Category 6, which Royal
Caribbean describes as the largest waterpark at sea.
Among the attractions will be Crown’s Edge, combining
elements of a skywalk and zip line 154 feet above the ocean. The pool offering
includes the new Coconut Cove and the adults-only Hideaway, while the ship will
have 28 dining venues.
New accommodation concepts are also being introduced.
The three-deck Ultimate Family Treehouse will include a rooftop terrace,
whirlpool and a two-deck area designed for teenagers.
Dining options will range from the multi-course
Orleans Parrish Supper Club to Royal Railway – Hero Station, an immersive
restaurant designed around a train-car experience. Royal Caribbean also plans a
new venue offering hands-on cooking classes.
From August 2027, these onboard features will be
combined with Royal Caribbean’s Caribbean network from Miami. Western
itineraries will include destinations such as Cozumel and Roatan, while Eastern
Caribbean sailings can feature St. Thomas and St. Maarten, giving the new ship
a mix of established regional ports and Royal Caribbean’s private-island
product in The Bahamas.
