The global cruise market could almost double in value
over the next decade, driven by rising passenger numbers, fleet expansion and
growing demand for premium, luxury and experience-focused travel. Maximize
Market Research estimates the market at $19.41 billion in 2025 and forecasts it
will reach $38.48 billion by 2034, representing average annual growth of 7.9%.
Passenger volumes are already expanding. Around 37.2
million people took an ocean cruise in 2025, 7.5% more than a year earlier.
North America remained the largest source region with more than 22 million
passengers, while the Caribbean attracted more than 16 million cruise visitors.
Capacity is set to increase further. The global fleet
comprised around 310 ocean-going ships in 2025, while nearly 80 new ocean,
expedition and river vessels were in the development pipeline through 2036.
Operators are simultaneously investing in new itineraries, luxury and
expedition products and more efficient ship technologies.
Premium demand supports growth
Mainstream cruising remains the industry's largest
segment, accounting for an estimated 50–55% of the market in 2025. Premium
cruises represented around 30–32%, while luxury cruising accounted for
approximately 15%. Smaller vessels are particularly important for expedition,
luxury and destination-focused products.
The customer base is also broadening. Around 35% of
ocean cruise passengers were under the age of 40 in 2025, while family and
multigenerational travel are contributing to demand alongside established
cruise segments.
Investment is increasingly extending beyond
traditional markets. Asia-Pacific is benefiting from cruise expansion in China,
Japan and Australia, while new capacity is also being developed in the Middle
East. South America offers further potential through destinations including
Brazil, Argentina and the Amazon region.
Alongside fleet growth, the industry is investing in
shore-power capability, fuel-flexible ships, energy efficiency and advanced
wastewater systems. Digitalisation is another focus, with mobile services,
smart cabins and AI-supported personalisation becoming part of the competition
for cruise passengers.
With more ships entering service and cruise products
becoming increasingly differentiated by destination, experience and service
level, the market research expects continued expansion across both established
and emerging cruise regions through 2034.
