Hyatt has opened Hyatt Centric Sapporo, introducing
its lifestyle brand to Hokkaido for the first time. The new 216-room hotel
occupies the upper floors of a mixed-use tower in central Sapporo and is
positioned as an urban base for travelers exploring both the Japanese city and
the wider island.
The location places guests next to the historic former
Hokkaido Government Office, widely known as the Red Brick Building, and close
to Odori Park. Odori subway station can be reached within a few minutes via an
underground walkway, while JR Sapporo Station is around a ten-minute walk away.
The connections are particularly relevant for visitors using Sapporo as the
starting point for journeys across Hokkaido.
Beyond its role as the island’s main urban center,
Sapporo provides access to Hokkaido’s ski resorts, hot springs, national parks
and mountain regions. The city itself has developed into a year-round
destination, with major events ranging from the Sapporo Snow Festival in winter
to seasonal festivals and autumn food events. Hyatt is seeking to reflect this
broader regional identity throughout the new property.
Hokkaido shapes the design
The hotel’s concept takes inspiration from Takeshiro
Matsuura, the 19th-century explorer and cartographer associated with the naming
of Hokkaido. Hyatt describes the property as a contemporary “Northern
Explorer’s Residence,” with regional landscapes, craftsmanship and traditions
informing its interiors.
All 216 rooms and suites measure at least 36 square
meters and feature large windows overlooking Sapporo. Local references include
a large wooden check-in counter produced by a regional artisan, straw artworks
and design details influenced by everyday life in Hokkaido. Reclaimed wood and
a fireplace lounge add warmer elements to the contemporary interiors.
“We are thrilled to introduce the Hyatt Centric brand
to Sapporo, a dynamic destination where every season reveals a new side of
Hokkaido,” said General Manager Yuki Takimura. “Placing you in the middle of
the action, Hyatt Centric Sapporo is designed to be an ideal starting point for
exploration.”
The concept extends beyond the hotel itself. Local
Insiders provide recommendations based on current events, seasonal attractions
and individual interests, supported by seasonal maps and daily suggestions for
exploring the city.
Regional produce takes center stage
Hokkaido’s food culture is another major element of
the property. Matsu Grill & Bar, located on the 17th floor, combines
regional seafood and agricultural produce with Mediterranean influences and
wood-fired cooking. Its elevated position also provides panoramic views across
Sapporo.
At street level, Mr. Fish by Hyatt Centric Sapporo
takes a more casual approach. Its fish and chips use seasonal white fish from
waters around Hokkaido together with locally grown potatoes, while craft beer,
fish burgers and takeaway options are also available.
To mark the opening, Hyatt has introduced a limited
offer for qualifying stays through the end of December 2026 when booked by 31
October. Benefits include discounted rates, breakfast and a JPY 3,000 hotel
credit per room and stay, with additional points available to eligible World of
Hyatt members.
With its central location, Hyatt Centric Sapporo adds
another internationally branded option to Hokkaido’s capital while targeting
travelers who want to combine an urban stay with excursions across the island.
The opening also gives Hyatt Centric a foothold in one of Japan’s most
distinctive year-round leisure destinations.
