With the incumbent, Zurab Pololikashvili, not seeking re-election, the field is wide open. According to breakingtravelnews, the Executive Council will meet in Madrid on May 29–30 to recommend a candidate, with final confirmation at the General Assembly in Riyadh in November.

The Candidates

·         Gloria Guevara (Mexico): Former Secretary of Tourism and ex-President of the WTTC. Advocates for restoring UN Tourism's credibility, focusing on sustainability, job creation, and stronger global tourism policies.

·         Harry Theoharis (Greece): Former Greek Tourism Minister. Promotes expanding membership to include the US, UK, Australia, and New Zealand, and advocates for sustainable tourism and digital innovation.

·         Muhammad Adam (Ghana): Diplomat with Ghana’s backing, focusing on promoting Africa's tourism potential.

·         Shaikha Al Nowais (UAE): Director of Internal Audit at Rotana, emphasizing financial accountability and investment within UN Tourism.

·         Habib Ammar (Tunisia): Tourism expert with a focus on sustainable growth and cooperation among African and Mediterranean countries.

Voting Process

The Executive Council, comprising 35 member states from various regions, will select the new leader through a private vote. A simple majority (50% plus one) is needed, with multiple ballots if necessary.

Key Dynamics

With Africa holding significant representation, Muhammad Adam and Habib Ammar emerge as potential frontrunners, though vote splitting could benefit other candidates. Gloria Guevara's international support and Theoharis’s membership expansion proposal are also gaining traction. The outcome will shape global tourism policy for the next four years.
