Palma's beaches (Mallorca) will lose 1,750 sun loungers in 2026 due to rising sea levels.

Anyone who thought that climate change wouldn't have an impact on tourism was mistaken, and the consequences are already beginning to be felt. An example of this is the beaches of Palma (Mallorca) , which will have fewer sun loungers next year, precisely because of the loss of coastline and rising sea levels. The City Council is preparing a 20% reduction in these facilities on the four beaches of the Mallorcan capital.

Specifically, across the four beaches, 1,644 sun loungers will be lost. Playa de Palma, being the largest, will lose the most, going from the current 6,000 to 4,436. Cala Mayor will go from 300 to 250; Ciutat Jardí, from 300 to 288; and Cala Estància, from 150 to 132.

On the other hand, Can Pere Antoni beach —which also belongs to Palma, but is not under the jurisdiction of the City Council, but rather under the authority of the Coastal Authority—will also have fewer sunbeds. In this case, it will lose up to 106 sunbeds, which adds up to 1,750 fewer sunbeds across the five beaches.

"There has been a loss of sand on the beaches, and we couldn't maintain the same number of sunbeds and umbrellas. This has coincided with complaints from residents who feel they have less space on the sand. The mayor is aware that most residents don't use the sunbed service, so we decided to carry out this redistribution," explained Mercedes Celeste, spokesperson for the City Council, in a statement to Diario de Mallorca.
