The
announcement was made during the 81st IATA Annual General Meeting and World Air
Transport Summit (WATS), where a cooperation agreement was signed by EVA Air
President Clay Sun and IATA Director General Willie Walsh.
With
shifting climate patterns contributing to more frequent and unpredictable
turbulence, Turbulence Aware provides real-time data that allows airlines to
enhance route planning and in-flight safety. EVA Air will integrate the
platform by deploying 33 of its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft to contribute to and
benefit from the global turbulence data network.
The
Turbulence Aware platform aggregates anonymized turbulence reports from 28
participating airlines and more than 2,700 aircraft. These reports are
transformed into real-time visual data that flight crews can access during
operations, enabling timely course adjustments to avoid turbulent zones. In
2024 alone, the platform processed 51.8 million turbulence reports—an increase
of 35% from the previous year.
By
joining this initiative, EVA Air aims to support enhanced flight safety,
improved fuel efficiency, and greater passenger comfort. The collaboration also
underscores the airline’s proactive approach in adopting advanced digital tools
to manage increasingly complex weather challenges.
IATA,
a leading industry association with approximately 350 member airlines
representing over 80% of global air traffic, continues to drive safety,
innovation, and policy development across the aviation sector.
