Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has launched a new artistic
collaboration with choreographer Rafael Bonachela, marked by the world premiere
of his work “Pulso” on board the EUROPA 2. The production introduces a series
of performances that combine contemporary dance with the intimate setting of a
luxury cruise, with further voyages already planned.
Contemporary dance meets life at sea
Rafael Bonachela is internationally recognised for a
movement language that blends classical precision with modern dynamism. Since
2009, he has served as Artistic Director of the Sydney Dance Company, shaping
it into one of the leading contemporary ensembles worldwide.
“Having a world premiere on board and being
commissioned by Hapag-Lloyd Cruises to create a new work for the EUROPA 2 was a
gift for me. I immediately sensed that this was going to be an adventure that I
was very open to. It felt very special to experience a cruise ship that
integrates contemporary dance with this standard into its programme and gives
the guests on board space to experience this impressive diversity of art and
culture,” Bonachela said.
A stage with close audience connection
With a maximum of 500 guests, the EUROPA 2 offers an
exclusive environment that allows for close interaction between artists and
audience. The ship’s cultural concept combines high-end travel with curated
performances, ranging from avant-garde productions to contemporary ballet.
Two works, one artistic narrative
Alongside “Pulso”, Bonachela presents “Somos”, a work
previously shown only in Australia and described as a “love letter” to his
Spanish heritage. Its international premiere took place on El Hierro in the
Canary Islands. “Pulso”, created specifically for the ship’s stage, continues
this narrative, exploring themes of cultural identity, emotional encounters and
human connection.
“For me and for the dancers, it’s almost as if ‘Pulso’
was the continuation of ‘Somos’,” Bonachela added.
Continued programme in 2026
The collaboration will continue with further voyages,
including a winter itinerary in 2026 where Rafael Bonachela’s productions will
again form part of the onboard programme curated by Hapag-Lloyd Cruises.
Sample itinerary from Cape Town to Mauritius
On the 16-day voyage EUX2627 from Cape Town to
Mauritius, guests will experience destinations such as East London, Maputo and
Port d’Ehoala before arriving in Port Louis. Performances of “Somos” and
“Pulso” will once again provide insight into Bonachela’s contemporary dance
work, complementing a journey that combines nature, culture and artistic
expression.
