Bangkok will become a citywide stage for contemporary
art when the Bangkok Art Biennale 2026 opens on 29 October. Running until 28
February 2027, the fifth edition will connect some of the Thai capital’s
best-known temples and cultural landmarks with museums, shopping districts,
educational institutions and public spaces.
Under the theme “Angels & Mara”, the biennale
brings together Thai and international artists working across painting,
sculpture, photography, performance, film and multimedia. For visitors, the
event creates an art route through different parts of Bangkok, combining
contemporary culture with historic neighbourhoods, riverside communities and
everyday urban life.
Angels and temptation shape the 2026 theme
The title “Angels & Mara” draws on religious,
cultural and philosophical traditions and explores the contrast between
guardians of light and forces of temptation. The works address themes ranging
from hope and despair to spirituality and materialism, memory and forgetting, and
desire and restraint.
Bangkok itself provides part of the context. The
city’s Thai name, Krung Thep, translates as “City of Angels”, linking the theme
directly to the destination while giving participating artists a framework for
examining conflict, uncertainty and transformation in contemporary life.
“Bangkok Art Biennale 2026 reflects TAT’s direction to
position Thailand as a high-value and meaningful destination, where culture,
creativity and contemporary identity create deeper reasons to travel,” said TAT
Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool.
She added that transforming Bangkok into a citywide
platform for artistic discovery could strengthen the capital’s international
visibility while supporting Thailand’s festival economy.
Temples and museums become part of the art route
The geographical spread of BAB 2026 is one of the
defining elements of the event. Exhibitions and installations will appear at
Wat Arun, Wat Pho and Wat Prayoon as well as Museum Siam, Bangkok Art and
Culture Centre and the National Museum Bangkok.
Contemporary commercial and urban venues including One
Bangkok, centralwOrld and Siam Paragon are also participating, alongside the
Art Centre at Silpakorn University.
Together, the locations allow visitors to move between
Bangkok’s historic quarters and newer urban districts while encountering
contemporary artworks in settings that range from Buddhist temples to modern
cultural and commercial spaces.
Contemporary art becomes a tourism experience
The Tourism Authority of Thailand plans to use the
biennale to encourage culture-led travel, linking the exhibitions with heritage
attractions, creative districts and other aspects of city life.
Rather than concentrating the festival within a single
exhibition complex, the dispersed venues encourage visitors to explore
different neighbourhoods. The journey between individual works therefore
becomes part of the experience, creating connections between Bangkok’s artistic
programme and the city surrounding it.
The festival is supported through cooperation between
cultural organisations, tourism authorities, government bodies and
private-sector partners. Thai Beverage Public Company Limited has been a major
supporter since 2018.
Previous editions attracted 3.5 million visitors
Bangkok Art Biennale was founded in 2017 and staged
for the first time in 2018 with the aim of developing Bangkok as a major
Southeast Asian destination for contemporary art.
Previous editions have attracted more than 3.5 million
visitors and featured works by over 300 artists from Asia, Europe, the
Americas, Oceania and Africa. During the pandemic, the BAB Virtual Venue also
reached more than 2.3 million online viewers worldwide.
The 2026 edition continues this international approach
while using Bangkok itself as an exhibition space, placing contemporary art
alongside some of the cultural and architectural landmarks that already draw
travellers to the Thai capital.
