The World Travel & Tourism Council has released
its latest report, Cruising for Impact, outlining the positive role cruise
tourism plays in communities and destinations worldwide. According to the
study, the cruise sector contributes significantly to economic development,
employment and community vitality in coastal and port regions.
The report highlights how cruise tourism connects
travelers with new destinations while creating opportunities for local
businesses and supporting livelihoods across tourism-dependent economies.
Major contribution to the global economy
According to the report, cruise tourism generated
US$98.5 billion in global GDP in 2024 and produced a total economic output of
US$199 billion. The sector supported approximately 1.8 million jobs worldwide
and delivered US$60.1 billion in wages.
Research cited from Cruise Lines International
Association shows that more than 60 percent of cruise passengers return to
destinations they first discovered during a cruise. This trend indicates that
cruise travel not only introduces visitors to new locations but also stimulates
repeat tourism and long-term demand.
Strong links with local economies
The report emphasizes the integration of cruise
tourism with local economies. More than 1.4 million jobs are supported onshore
in ports and surrounding communities. Globally, the data suggests that one
full-time job is supported for every 20 cruise passengers.
In addition, the research identifies US$93 billion in
direct cruise-related spending, much of which benefits local entrepreneurs,
small businesses and tourism micro-economies in port cities and coastal
destinations.
Seven pillars of community impact
The report outlines seven key areas in which cruise
tourism contributes to positive social outcomes. These include job creation and
skills development, diversity and inclusion, community enrichment, cultural
preservation, infrastructure development, environmental innovation, and support
in health and crisis response.
It also highlights the importance of collaboration
between destinations, local communities and industry partners to ensure that
tourism growth remains inclusive and sustainable.
Growing role in global tourism
Cruise passenger capacity is projected to increase by
19 percent between 2022 and 2028, suggesting that the sector will play an even
greater role in supporting destinations worldwide.
Gloria Guevara, President and CEO of the World Travel
& Tourism Council, said: “Cruise tourism brings real and lasting positive
benefits to communities around the world. When travellers discover a
destination through cruising and choose to return, they create ongoing
opportunities for local businesses, support jobs, and contribute to the
long-term vitality of those communities. This report highlights the powerful
positive impact of cruise tourism, showing how it connects people, supports
livelihoods, and creates shared value for destinations around the world.”
The WTTC also emphasizes the importance of integrating
cruise tourism into national tourism strategies, with a focus on local
sourcing, workforce development and close cooperation with host communities.
According to the report, aligning tourism growth with long-term social value
can help ensure that cruise tourism continues to support inclusive and
resilient communities around the world.
