Peru releases previously blocked Machu Picchu booking capacity

Unconfirmed and unpaid reservations had reduced actual availability, with the affected spaces returning to the official booking system from 16 September

Additional capacity for Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail network is being released after Peru’s Ministry of Culture identified booking spaces that had remained blocked despite not being confirmed or paid for within the required deadlines.

The issue was discovered during a review of the official reservation system by the Ministry of Culture through its Decentralised Directorate of Culture in Cusco. According to the authority, the blocked spaces temporarily reduced the actual availability shown by the system and affected formal tourism operators trying to secure capacity for their clients.

Blocked capacity returns to the market

The affected spaces are to be released and made available again through the official reservation system from 9:00 a.m. on 16 September.

The measure is intended to ensure that capacity which has not been properly confirmed does not remain unavailable to other customers and tourism companies.

For tour operators selling Peru itineraries, the release is particularly relevant because access to Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail is capacity-controlled and availability can determine whether complete itineraries can be confirmed.

Unpaid reservations had reduced availability

According to the Ministry of Culture, the problem involved spaces that had been blocked within the reservation system but were neither confirmed nor paid for within the established time limits.

As a result, those spaces were effectively unavailable even though no completed booking existed. The ministry said their return to the system is intended to provide transparent and equitable access to the available capacity.

For international tour operators and travel agencies with Peru programmes, the release therefore creates an opportunity to check availability again for dates that may previously have appeared fully booked.
