Germany’s inbound tourism sector gathered momentum at the beginning of the peak summer holiday period. International visitors generated 10.8 million overnight stays in July 2026, an increase of 3.2 percent compared with the same month last year, according to provisional figures from the Federal Statistical Office. The result comes despite continuing geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty in key international markets.
From January through July, Germany recorded 47.1 million overnight stays by foreign visitors. This represents year-on-year growth of 1.0 percent and extends the positive development recorded during the first half of 2026.
Summer demand strengthens
The July figures indicate that international demand accelerated as the main European holiday season began. The German National Tourist Board expects further growth to be possible during the second half of the year.
Germany’s broad range of urban, cultural and rural destinations is helping the country maintain its position in a competitive European tourism market, according to the GNTB.
“Despite geopolitical conflicts and economic uncertainties, inbound tourism to Germany is holding its own, with demand on the rise. The current trend reflects the appeal of the ‘Germany as a Travel Destination’ brand and its solid positioning in the face of international competition,” says Petra Hedorfer, CEO of the GNTB.
She points to perceptions of Germany as a safe, service-oriented and high-quality destination as well as its value for money and presence in international source markets. “Germany is once again one of the top holiday destinations in Europe this summer,” Hedorfer adds.
Travel industry sentiment improves
The latest GNTB Travel Industry Expert Panel provides another indication of strengthening confidence. In its third-quarter survey, 45 percent of international travel industry decision-makers assessed their current Germany business positively.
That represents an increase of 17 percent compared with the previous quarter. Expectations for the months ahead are even stronger, with 51 percent of respondents taking a positive view of their Germany business prospects over the next six months.
The figures suggest that the improvement is not limited to overnight-stay statistics but is also being reflected in sentiment among international tourism professionals selling Germany.
Europeans remain eager to travel
Consumer intentions provide additional support for the outlook. According to the latest European Travel Commission Monitoring Sentiment for Intra-European Travel report, 81 percent of Europeans surveyed plan to take a trip between June and November.
The proportion is four percentage points higher than a year earlier, indicating continued resilience in European travel demand despite economic and geopolitical uncertainties.
For Germany, the combination of stronger July overnight stays, improving industry sentiment and continued enthusiasm for travel among European consumers provides a positive backdrop for the remainder of the 2026 tourism season.
