China’s flagship airline Air China has announced plans
to acquire 60 Airbus A320neo aircraft in a transaction valued at approximately $9.53
billion, underscoring continued confidence in long-term air travel demand and
fleet modernization. The agreement, signed with Airbus and involving one of the
carrier’s subsidiaries, was disclosed late Tuesday in a filing to the Shanghai
Stock Exchange.
According to the filing, the aircraft are scheduled
for delivery over a five-year period from 2028 to 2032, aligning with Air
China’s medium- and long-term capacity planning. The airline noted that the
purchase is consistent with its development strategy and prevailing market
demand, and is intended to optimize fleet structure while supporting
sustainable growth.
Approvals and Strategic Context
The transaction remains subject to approval by Air
China’s shareholders as well as authorization from relevant government
authorities. Once completed, the order will form part of a broader effort to
ensure capacity replenishment as older aircraft are phased out and operational
efficiency becomes increasingly critical.
The A320neo family is widely used for short- and
medium-haul routes, offering improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions
compared with previous generations—factors that have made the aircraft a
central component of many airlines’ renewal strategies.
Part of a Broader Wave of Airbus Orders
Air China’s announcement comes amid a series of recent
Airbus purchases by other Chinese carriers. Spring Airlines has disclosed plans
to acquire 30 A320neo aircraft in a deal valued at about $4.13 billion, while Juneyao
Airlines intends to purchase 25 A320 aircraft for roughly $4.1 billion,
according to stock exchange filings.
In addition, China Aircraft Leasing Group Holdings
Limited (CALC) has placed a firm order with Airbus for 30 A320neo Family
aircraft, citing strong customer demand. The deal was confirmed this week on
Airbus’s official website.
Taken together, the transactions point to renewed
momentum in China’s aviation sector and a strengthening relationship between
Chinese airlines and Airbus as carriers prepare for the next decade of growth.
