Lufthansa Airlines and Lufthansa CityLine have once
again been validated under the European Union’s EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit
Scheme) regulation, confirming their commitment to exemplary environmental
performance. The renewed validation—based on the environmental management
standard ISO 14001—recognises the airlines’ ongoing efforts to integrate
sustainability into all operational processes.
25 years of EMAS leadership in aviation
This year marks a milestone: 25 years since Lufthansa
CityLine became the first airline worldwide to achieve EMAS validation. Since
then, the carrier has maintained and continuously improved its environmental
management system, setting benchmarks for sustainable aviation practices.
“Through more efficient resource use and optimised
processes at Lufthansa Airlines and Lufthansa CityLine, we continue to advance
both environmental and economic goals,” said Jens Ritter, CEO of Lufthansa
Airlines. “We are maintaining this course even in economically challenging
times.”
Expanding certified environmental management
Lufthansa CityLine first introduced its environmental
management programme in 2000, pioneering the concept within global aviation.
Lufthansa Airlines followed in 2018 at its Munich hub, merging the system with
CityLine in 2022. The Frankfurt hub was added in December 2023, extending EMAS
certification to the core Lufthansa brand. Both airlines now issue a joint
annual Environmental Statement, detailing progress and future initiatives.
Innovation and digital responsibility
Around 40 environmental coordinators within Lufthansa
Airlines and Lufthansa CityLine work across departments to strengthen
ecological awareness and drive sustainable improvements. Digital solutions—such
as data-based analyses and monitoring systems—are key to enhancing transparency
and reducing emissions.
In 2024, both airlines expanded existing initiatives
and introduced new ones, including:
·
Engine-off taxiing procedures to cut fuel use and CO₂ emissions
·
An enhanced recycling concept across catering and ground operations
·
Optimised beverage loading, reducing onboard weight and fuel consumption
These measures form part of Lufthansa Group’s broader
sustainability strategy, aiming for greater resource efficiency and measurable
climate progress across all business areas.
