Türkiye’s tourism industry maintained its strength
through the summer despite wars, political tensions and instability in
surrounding regions. According to Firuz Baglikaya, chairman of the Turkish
Travel Agencies’ Association TURSAB, the country has continued to be perceived
as a stable holiday destination, with Russia, Germany and the UK remaining its
most important source markets.
The performance highlights the resilience of a tourism
industry operating in a particularly challenging geopolitical environment.
Baglikaya sees Türkiye’s relative stability as an important competitive
advantage but also argues that the country needs to diversify its tourism offer
beyond its traditionally strong coastal destinations.
Culture and gastronomy offer room for growth
Beach holidays remain one of the foundations of
Turkish tourism, and Baglikaya sees no reason to reduce existing coastal
capacity. At the same time, he believes further growth can come from segments
capable of attracting different types of visitors and extending tourism
activity beyond the conventional summer season.
Culture, gastronomy and business travel are among the
areas identified for further development. Health tourism has gained
considerable momentum over the past decade, while conference and meetings
tourism has also continued to recover and expand gradually.
Such diversification could help Türkiye make greater
use of its tourism infrastructure throughout the year rather than relying
predominantly on summer demand in the major Mediterranean and Aegean resorts.
Russia, Germany and UK remain key markets
Despite geopolitical uncertainty in the wider region,
Türkiye has continued to attract substantial numbers of international visitors.
Russia, Germany and the United Kingdom remain the three principal source
markets highlighted by TURSAB.
Baglikaya considers the country’s ability to maintain
its position during a period of military conflict and political instability in
neighbouring regions an indication of the underlying strength of the Turkish
tourism industry.
The challenge now is to build on that position by
strengthening tourism segments capable of complementing the established
sun-and-beach market.
TURSAB targets foreign digital travel platforms
Alongside tourism demand, TURSAB is increasingly
focusing on the influence of foreign digital travel platforms. Baglikaya called
for regulations that create equal competitive conditions between international
platforms and tourism businesses operating in Türkiye.
He pointed to regulatory action and substantial
penalties imposed on digital platforms in parts of Europe and warned against
Turkish legislation that could place domestic operators at a disadvantage.
TURSAB plans to lobby actively on the issue when
parliament reconvenes in October. The association is concerned that excessive
dependence on foreign platforms could shift significant control over the
distribution and sale of Turkish tourism products outside the country.
Digital verification targets unlicensed operators
The growth of online bookings has also increased the
importance of distinguishing licensed travel companies from illegal operators.
TURSAB has introduced a centralised Digital Verification System designed to
allow customers to check whether their bookings originate from authorised
businesses.
For the association, regulation of digital
distribution has therefore become part of a broader effort to protect both
travellers and licensed tourism companies. Alongside continued international
demand and greater diversification of the country's tourism products, TURSAB
sees the structure of online distribution as an increasingly important issue
for the future of Türkiye’s travel industry.
