The Department of Tourism under the Ministry of
Tourism and Sports has launched the Thailand Green Tourism Plan 2030, marking a
key milestone in Thailand’s mission to become a world leader in sustainable
tourism. Central to the plan is the newly introduced “Thailand Good Travel”
mark, a national standard designed to strengthen Thailand’s tourism
competitiveness and international reputation for sustainability.
A turning point for Thai tourism
“Thai tourism stands at a turning point,” said Ms.
Natreeya Taweewong, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.
“We must respond to climate challenges and align with global environmental
standards while fulfilling the expectations of modern travellers. The Thailand
Green Tourism Plan 2030 demonstrates our determination to create a tourism
industry that grows responsibly, protects cultural and social heritage, and
ensures value for future generations.”
Collaboration driving global green success
Under the theme “Igniting the Path to Global Green
Success,” the Thailand Green Tourism Plan 2030 brings together four core
partners: the Department of Tourism, Mahidol University International College
as the Sustainable Tourism Acceleration Centre (STAC Thailand), the Green
Destinations Foundation, and Travelife for Tour Operators. They are joined by 49
partner organisations from government, academia, and the private sector – all
working collectively to accelerate sustainable practices and deliver measurable
impact.
Thailand Good Travel Mark: The mark of trust
The Thailand Good Travel mark serves as a national
symbol of sustainability, benchmarked against Global Sustainable Tourism
Council (GSTC) criteria. Certification applies to destinations, community-based
tourism enterprises, small-scale accommodations (up to 50 rooms), and tour
operators. It recognises balanced performance across environmental, social,
cultural, and economic dimensions, ensuring that travellers choosing Thailand
make a responsible, future-friendly choice.
Defined as “The Mark of Trust: Verified Journeys,
Lasting Value,” the logo combines a green elephant with a check mark,
symbolising both Thailand’s heritage and commitment to global quality. The neon
green and orange colour palette represents innovation, nature, and the urgency
of climate awareness. As a bridge between Thai and international sustainability
frameworks, the mark strengthens global confidence in Thailand as a destination
where responsible travel and long-term prosperity coexist.
Empowering local operators and destinations
To bring the plan to life, the Department of Tourism
has introduced the Thailand Green Coach programme, a mentoring initiative that
supports tourism businesses in meeting international sustainability standards.
Throughout October 2025, regional workshops in Chachoengsao, Chiang Rai, Nakhon
Si Thammarat, and Nakhon Ratchasima will train operators in practical
sustainability tools, self-assessment methods, and digital reporting through
the national platform.
“Preparing our destinations and businesses to meet
international standards is essential for building global trust in Thai
tourism,” said Mr. Jaturon Phakdeewanit, Director-General of the Department of
Tourism. “With the Thailand Green Coach programme and regional workshops, we
are equipping our operators with the knowledge and tools they need to achieve
the Thailand Good Travel mark and thrive internationally.”
Towards the Top 100 Green Destinations
By the end of 2025, 30 destinations and businesses
will be nominated for inclusion in the Top 100 Green Destinations list and the Good
Travel Stories competition. Certified participants will receive the Thailand
Good Travel mark, a seal of commitment that fosters traveller trust and paves
the way for Thailand’s long-term, sustainable tourism growth.
