Boeing and Vietnam Airlines have confirmed the
Vietnamese flag carrier’s first order for Boeing single-aisle aircraft. The
airline finalized a purchase agreement for 50 Boeing 737 MAX airplanes,
selecting the 737-8 variant to support fleet modernization and network
expansion.
The announcement was made during a ceremony in
Washington, D.C., attended by representatives from the Vietnamese and U.S.
governments, Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Stephanie Pope, and
Dang Ngoc Hoa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Airlines.
Fleet modernization and growth strategy
Dang Ngoc Hoa described the order as a strategic
milestone for the airline.
“The investment in 50 Boeing 737-8 aircraft marks a
significant step in building a modern, fuel-efficient fleet while enhancing
operational performance and elevating service standards,” Hoa said. The
agreement, he added, strengthens the long-standing partnership between Vietnam
Airlines and Boeing and supports the carrier’s long-term development plans.
Vietnam Airlines intends to deploy the aircraft across
its short- and medium-haul network, addressing rising travel demand in
Southeast Asia. The 737-8, Boeing’s most widely used MAX variant, can carry up
to 200 passengers depending on configuration and offers a range suited for
domestic and regional routes.
Rising demand in the Vietnamese market
The order comes amid strong growth projections for
Vietnam’s aviation sector. Boeing estimates that passenger traffic in the
country is expected to double over the next decade, exceeding 75 million annual
passengers.
Stephanie Pope emphasized the operational fit of the
aircraft.
“We are proud to build on our partnership with Vietnam
Airlines as they pair the 737 MAX with the 787 Dreamliner to scale regional
networks and strengthen connectivity across Asia,” Pope said.
Complementing the 787 Dreamliner fleet
Vietnam Airlines currently operates 17 Boeing 787
Dreamliners on regional and long-haul routes, including services between
Vietnam and Europe. According to Boeing, the combined use of 737 MAX and 787
aircraft offers fuel-efficiency gains of 20 to 25 percent compared with
previous-generation models.
Boeing maintains an active presence in Vietnam through
commercial aviation activities, supply chain partnerships, training initiatives
and local offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
