Retrofit programme brings new cabin to Lufthansa’s A320 fleet

Lufthansa is advancing the modernisation of its short- and medium-haul product with an extensive retrofit programme for its Airbus A320 fleet. A total of 38 aircraft are scheduled to receive a redesigned cabin by 2029. The upgrades include new seats, integrated USB ports at every seat and significantly larger overhead bins.

The programme has been underway since spring of last year. According to Lufthansa, each aircraft retrofit requires approximately 30 days and involves the installation of around 1,000 individual components sourced from roughly 100 suppliers.

“Our ambition is clear: We want to offer our guests a premium experience on short- and medium-haul routes as well,” said Jens Ritter, CEO Lufthansa Airlines. “The A320 family is our largest fleet – that’s why we’re investing in the modernisation of more than 30 aircraft. We are presenting our guests with a modern, high-quality cabin whose design is inspired by our new long-haul deliveries.”

First retrofitted aircraft returns to service

The first fully modernised Airbus A320, registered D-AIZY and known internally as “Zulu Yankee”, has been back in scheduled operations since mid-February. Lufthansa describes the aircraft as the initial step in a multi-year fleet upgrade designed to align cabin standards more closely across route networks.

Focus on seating comfort and ergonomics

A central element of the retrofit is the introduction of new seats from Italian manufacturer Geven. The redesigned seating aims to improve passenger comfort through enhanced ergonomics. Adjustable headrests allow horizontal positioning, while Business Class seats offer a greater recline compared with the previous configuration.

Tablet and smartphone holders are integrated into all seats, reflecting growing passenger demand for personal device usage during flights.

Expanded overhead storage capacity

The cabin redesign also addresses carry-on baggage capacity. The newly installed overhead bins are approximately 40% larger than their predecessors. The increase is achieved by enabling vertical stowage of luggage, allowing more efficient use of available space.

Lufthansa expects the larger bins to contribute to smoother boarding processes, as passengers can store their baggage more quickly. The airline also emphasises the visual impact of the new bin design, which introduces a cleaner and more contemporary cabin aesthetic.

Integrated charging options at every seat

Each seat in the retrofitted aircraft is equipped with both USB-A and USB-C ports. The dual configuration allows passengers to charge a broad range of mobile devices directly at their seats, supporting the continued shift toward personal in-flight entertainment consumption.

With the retrofit programme, Lufthansa is extending cabin renewal efforts beyond its long-haul fleet, targeting greater product consistency across its European network.
