Hundreds of passengers remained stranded at Jomo
Kenyatta International Airport on Tuesday as an aviation workers’ strike
entered its second day, causing widespread delays across domestic and
international flights.
The “go-slow” action, initiated by members of the
Kenya Aviation Workers Union, has significantly slowed air traffic operations
since Monday. Flight departures and arrivals were delayed by up to four hours,
with passengers held in departure halls while airlines adjusted schedules.
Authorities stated that the government is working with
aviation agencies and unions to restore normal operations.
Airlines report delays and adjustments
Kenya Airways confirmed that departures from Jomo
Kenyatta International Airport were experiencing delays of up to four hours due
to disruptions in air traffic control services. The airline said it had
modified its network and was cooperating with the Kenya Civil Aviation
Authority and airport stakeholders to manage the situation.
“Passengers are advised to expect schedule
adjustments,” Kenya Airways said, urging travellers to check flight status
before heading to the airport. The carrier added that rebooking options were
available through its digital channels.
Safety remains priority, pilots say
The Kenya Airline Pilots Association expressed concern
over the operational disruptions, noting that delays, diversions, and
cancellations had affected flight operations nationwide.
Despite the challenges, the association stressed that
safety standards were being maintained as airlines and regulators continued to
manage air traffic flows.
Wider impact on regional connectivity
Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the busiest
aviation hub in East and Central Africa, plays a central role in regional and
intercontinental travel. Continued disruption has created ripple effects across
airlines operating routes between Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.
Union representatives linked the strike to
long-standing grievances over working conditions, staffing levels, and proposed
sector reforms. The Kenya Aviation Workers Union has called for urgent dialogue
with government authorities and aviation regulators.
The Kenyan government confirmed that negotiations are
underway, warning that prolonged disruptions could affect passenger travel,
cargo operations, and broader economic activity if the dispute continues.
