Winter Storm Fern disrupts Delta operations across multiple U.S. states

As Winter Storm Fern advances eastward, Delta Air Lines is adjusting its operations in response to forecasts of heavy snowfall and ice. Significant snowfall is expected in Oklahoma, with accumulating ice forecast across North Texas beginning Friday evening. To ensure the safety of customers and employees, Delta has canceled flights at select airports in North Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and Tennessee.

Affected customers are being automatically rebooked on the next best available itinerary. Additional changes can be made through the Delta app or on Delta.com, where travelers are encouraged to monitor their flight status before heading to the airport.

Operational adjustments and customer support

In anticipation of severe winter conditions, Delta is proactively adjusting staffing levels across its network. This includes deploying experienced teams from cold-weather hubs to support deicing and baggage operations at airports such as Atlanta, Birmingham, Huntsville, Knoxville and Nashville. These measures are intended to maintain operational stability and assist customers during weather-related disruptions.

Current forecasts indicate that the storm system may begin to affect operations in the Northeastern United States starting Sunday afternoon. To help minimize further disruption, Delta has issued a travel waiver for Eastern North America, in addition to an existing winter weather waiver covering impacted areas in the central and southeastern United States. Both waivers apply to travel to, from or through affected cities.

Guidance for travelers

Delta advises customers to verify flight status via the Delta app or Delta.com prior to arriving at the airport. The airline’s self-service standby feature within the app allows eligible U.S. domestic customers on the final leg of their journey to view and join standby lists, offering additional flexibility when seats are available.

Customers traveling on U.S. domestic itineraries who experience a delay of three hours or more and choose not to travel are entitled to a full refund for the unused portion of their ticket, including ancillary fees and checked baggage charges. For international itineraries, the same refund eligibility applies in cases of delays of six hours or more when customers opt not to fly.

Ongoing monitoring as weather evolves

Delta continues to closely monitor forecasts predicting freezing rain, sleet and ice accumulation across Texas, the Southeast, including the airline’s Atlanta hub, and into the Northeast over the coming days. Schedule adjustments will be made as necessary, with customer safety remaining the top priority. Travelers are encouraged to sign up for mobile or email notifications to receive timely updates and to check their flight status regularly as conditions develop.
