Swiss International Air Lines will introduce the Airbus A350-900 on its Zurich–Mumbai route from 15 December 2026, expanding the deployment of its newest long-haul aircraft. The change will bring the airline's redesigned SWISS Senses cabin to India for the first time, offering passengers updated seating, greater privacy and new inflight entertainment systems.
The A350 will initially operate daily between Zurich and Mumbai until 3 January 2027. From 4 January, SWISS plans to deploy the aircraft on six days per week while maintaining daily service to the Indian financial centre. The airline currently intends to use the A350 on the route only during the 2026/27 winter timetable, with no announcement yet concerning a permanent deployment.
Mumbai has previously been served primarily by Airbus A330 aircraft. The introduction of the A350 represents both a product upgrade and an operational change, with SWISS expecting the flight time from Zurich to Mumbai to decrease by approximately 25 minutes. The journey is scheduled to take around eight hours and ten minutes, reflecting the newer aircraft's aerodynamic design, engine performance and ability to operate at higher cruising altitudes.
New cabin experience reaches India
The introduction of the A350 will make the SWISS Senses long-haul product available on flights to the Indian market for the first time.
The cabin has been redesigned to provide additional comfort and privacy, with larger entertainment screens and updated onboard technology. The aircraft forms part of the airline's broader long-haul fleet modernisation programme, which combines improvements to the passenger experience with greater operational efficiency.
For passengers travelling between Switzerland and India, the aircraft change will be particularly relevant during the winter travel season. Mumbai is an important destination for business travel as well as a gateway for visitors exploring western India and other parts of the country.
The planned deployment also offers passengers connecting through Zurich an opportunity to experience the new cabin product on a route that has traditionally been operated with older-generation widebody aircraft.
Although SWISS will continue offering daily flights to Mumbai after 3 January, passengers should note that the A350 is currently scheduled for six weekly services from that date. Aircraft allocation may therefore vary depending on the travel day.
Special A350 livery to remain in service
Alongside the Mumbai announcement, SWISS has confirmed that its first Airbus A350 will retain its distinctive “SWISS Wanderlust” livery longer than originally planned.
The airline had initially intended to keep the special design until the first quarter of 2027. It has now decided to extend that period, although no final date has been announced for the aircraft's return to the standard SWISS colour scheme.
The repainting will take place during an already scheduled maintenance-related painting appointment, avoiding the need for a separate operation solely to remove the special design.
The decision means that the visually distinctive aircraft will remain part of the SWISS fleet beyond its originally planned appearance period.
The A350 introduction on the Mumbai route forms part of SWISS's ongoing fleet renewal within the Lufthansa Group. The newer aircraft offers operational advantages compared with the Airbus A330, while the SWISS Senses cabin provides a more modern long-haul product.
For the travel trade, the principal change is the availability of the new cabin experience on a major India route during the coming winter season. The limited deployment period and subsequent reduction to six weekly A350 services will be important considerations when advising passengers who specifically wish to travel on the new aircraft.
