Low-cost carrier Ryanair plans to permanently close
its base at Thessaloniki Airport at the end of the current summer season,
according to reports in Greek media. The move is reportedly linked to rising
airport fees and has triggered concern among local authorities and tourism
representatives in Greece’s second-largest city.
The decision has already been communicated to company
employees, local news outlet Npress reported. Thessaloniki, the largest city in
northern Greece, is considered an important gateway for regional tourism and
international connectivity.
Local stakeholders are warning that the withdrawal of
the airline’s base could have a significant impact on both tourism and the
wider regional economy. Ryanair has played an important role in connecting
Thessaloniki with multiple European destinations, particularly in the low-cost
leisure travel segment.
Authorities prepare emergency discussions
According to local reports, district officials are
planning an urgent meeting to assess the potential consequences of the decision
and discuss possible response measures.
The reported closure has intensified concerns about
connectivity, visitor numbers and the economic effects on businesses linked to
tourism and aviation services in the region.
At the same time, reports suggest that a future return
of the Ryanair base has not been entirely ruled out. Discussions regarding
airport costs and operational conditions could therefore remain open beyond the
current summer season.
