Radisson Hotel Group has announced the global rollout
of its Verified Net Zero Hotels (VNZ) program, marking the transition from a
2025 pilot initiative to a structured multi-year roadmap. The next phase of the
program was officially presented at the International Hospitality Investment
Forum (IHIF) 2026, taking place through 25 March.
Originally launched as a proof of concept
demonstrating that net zero status can be achieved even in existing hotel
buildings, the initiative is now evolving into a scalable international
program. Radisson Hotel Group aims to establish 100 Verified Net Zero hotels
worldwide by 2030.
Roadmap for international expansion
The expansion will begin with a phased rollout in
2026. The first projects are planned in Norway, followed by Denmark, Sweden,
the United Kingdom and South Africa. The latter will host the first Verified
Net Zero hotel on the African continent, marking the program’s expansion beyond
its European base.
Further growth is planned over the next five years in
additional destinations including Germany, Austria and Spain’s Canary Islands.
Through this strategy the hotel group aims to position operational net zero as
a practical model for hotels worldwide.
Federico J. González Tejera, CEO of Radisson Hotel
Group, emphasised the broader role of sustainability within the company’s
long-term strategy. “At Radisson Hotel Group, sustainability ultimately starts
with people. It is about delivering for our guests, creating value for our
owners, and supporting the communities where we operate. Verified Net Zero
Hotels are an important step in our net zero transformation, setting a new
standard for how hospitality can reduce its environmental impact while continuing
to support people, destinations and economic activity.”
Net zero framework covering all emission scopes
The Verified Net Zero Hotels program is based on a
comprehensive framework that addresses all three emission scopes. It follows
the Net Zero Methodology for Hotels and aligns with the Science Based Targets
initiative.
In Verified Net Zero Hotels, Scope 1 and Scope 2
emissions are eliminated through electrification, the use of renewable heating
and cooling networks and the sourcing of 100 percent renewable energy.
Operational Scope 3 emissions are significantly reduced through measures
affecting food and beverage operations, waste management, laundry services,
guest amenities and business travel.
Each participating hotel undergoes independent
verification by TÜV Rheinland to ensure compliance with internationally
recognised net zero standards.
Guests staying at Verified Net Zero Hotels experience
properties powered entirely by renewable energy, low-carbon menus and
operational concepts designed to minimise waste. As a result, both hotel stays
and meetings can achieve a net-zero footprint.
Early results show strong guest response
Initial results from the two operational Verified Net
Zero hotels in Manchester and Oslo indicate that environmental and commercial
performance can advance simultaneously. Guest awareness levels exceed 70
percent, and around 20 percent of guests report that they chose the hotel
specifically because of its net zero status.
“The excellent results from the Manchester and Oslo
Verified Net Zero hotels support the expansion of Radisson Hotel Group’s
pioneering program,” said Inge Huijbrechts, Chief Sustainability & Security
Officer at Radisson Hotel Group. “These hotels demonstrate strong carbon
reduction across all emission scopes, high guest awareness and clear support
for sustainable meetings and events.”
Verified Net Zero icon introduced
During IHIF 2026, González Tejera also unveiled the
new Verified Net Zero icon, which will serve as the program’s official visual
symbol. The icon will appear both physically and digitally throughout
participating hotels, including in lobbies and guest touchpoints supported by
QR-enabled storytelling.
A 3D-printed version of the icon was also presented at
the event. Created using organic waste material from hotel operations, it
reflects the program’s approach to visible and measurable sustainability.
“TÜV Rheinland supports Radisson Hotel Group’s
Verified Net Zero initiative by providing independent verification of their
decarbonization measures,” said Dr Kai Höhmann, Senior Vice President
Customized Solutions at TÜV Rheinland. “Ensuring transparency and credibility
in sustainability efforts is crucial, and we are committed to upholding these
standards through rigorous evaluation.”
Operational net zero as a scalable model
With the global rollout of the Verified Net Zero
Hotels program, Radisson Hotel Group aims to establish operational net zero as
a transparent and scalable model for the hospitality sector. As sustainability
requirements from regulators, investors and travellers continue to grow, the
initiative is intended to demonstrate how environmental responsibility and
commercial performance can advance together in modern tourism.
