Marriott Luxury Group launches ‘Art of Arrival’ artist residency program in Greater China

Luxury Group by Marriott International has introduced “Art of Arrival,” a new artist residency program designed to connect contemporary art with the experience of luxury travel. The initiative debuted during Hong Kong Art Month and invites emerging Chinese artist Chen Zuo to explore the relationship between place, creativity and hospitality through a series of artistic projects and international exhibitions.

The program combines an immersive artist residency, a commissioned artwork and an international exhibition journey. Through this format, Marriott’s Luxury Group aims to transform the concept of arrival at a destination into a cultural experience shaped by art, design and local context.

“Luxury today is defined by moments of arrival and cultural relevance that leave lasting personal meaning,” said Bart Buiring, Managing Director, Luxury, Greater China, Marriott International. “With ‘Art of Arrival,’ we reaffirm our commitment to offering more than refined stays. We create immersive cultural encounters, where each arrival is more than reaching a destination. It becomes a moment where art and life intersect, inspiring a narrative unique to that place.”

Artistic inspiration from Suzhou

The first chapter of the program took place in Suzhou. During his residency at The Ritz-Carlton, Suzhou, Chen Zuo drew inspiration from the city’s classical gardens, waterways, urban architecture and the distinctive shapes of Taihu scholar’s stones.

These natural and architectural elements shaped the artworks created during the residency and became the conceptual foundation for the project. For Chen Zuo, the experience offered a rare opportunity to rethink the pace and structure of artistic work.

“It granted me the rare gift of unhurried focus – time to observe, reflect, and evolve my practice within a complex cultural framework,” said Chen Zuo. “When the residency is integrated into the creative process itself, the work develops with heightened clarity and purpose.”

The resulting artwork will debut during Hong Kong Art Month with a private presentation at The St. Regis Hong Kong, bringing together collectors, gallery representatives and cultural opinion leaders. Following its premiere, the work will travel to Art Basel in Switzerland in collaboration with Galerie Urs Meile, presenting the project to an international audience.

The program will conclude with a tour across selected Luxury Group hotels in Greater China, including private salons, collector events and artist talks that continue the dialogue between contemporary art and hospitality.

Documenting the creative journey

To capture the development of the residency, Luxury Group partnered with Tatler China to produce a short documentary following Chen Zuo’s artistic process. The film traces his journey from his studio in Beijing to the gardens and canals of Suzhou and ultimately to the international unveiling in Hong Kong.

Structured around moments of observation and immersion, the documentary reflects the program’s core philosophy that creativity grows through attention and reflection rather than spectacle. The film will premiere in late March across official brand channels, including Marriott Bonvoy’s WeChat platform.

Art-driven experiences across Hong Kong

Alongside the residency program, several Luxury Group hotels are presenting special art initiatives during Hong Kong Art Month.

At The St. Regis Hong Kong in Wan Chai, a collaboration with the premium sparkling tea brand Mindful Sparks and local artist Elsa Ngai has resulted in a limited-edition sparkling tea experience for guests. Inspired by the hotel’s signature fragrance “Caroline’s Four Hundred,” the beverage is presented in a bespoke bottle featuring Ngai’s artwork that reflects the vibrancy of Hong Kong’s cityscape.

JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong has partnered with internationally recognised sculptor Richard X. Zawitz to transform the 34th floor into the “Infinity Guestroom Floor,” inspired by his artistic concept of “Curvism.” Beginning on March 18, the hotel is presenting a two-week solo exhibition that integrates sculptural works into the guest experience.

Meanwhile, The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong is showcasing “Dialogue of Stillness and Resilience,” a site-specific installation by Angus Ting, founder of the local bamboo craft brand Yiwooo. Displayed in the lobby on the 103rd floor from March 17 to April 8, the installation responds to natural light and the rhythms of the city below, offering visitors a moment of reflection above Hong Kong’s urban landscape.

A new model for cultural travel

With “Art of Arrival,” Luxury Group by Marriott International is introducing a new approach to cultural engagement within luxury travel. Rather than presenting art solely as an exhibition, the program encourages guests to encounter creativity as part of the journey itself.

By linking artistic collaboration with iconic destinations and hotel spaces, the initiative aims to deepen the relationship between travel, culture and contemporary creativity. As the program develops, Marriott’s Luxury Group plans to continue exploring how art, lifestyle and hospitality can intersect to create meaningful travel experiences.
