Germany has issued an updated travel alert for the
United States, advising travellers to remain vigilant and exercise increased
caution in the wake of a fatal shooting during a U.S. Immigration and Customs
Enforcement operation in Minneapolis. The warning reflects growing concern over
demonstrations that have, in some cases, escalated into violent clashes with
federal immigration and security authorities.
In its guidance, the German Foreign Ministry points to
Minneapolis and other U.S. cities where protests have led to confrontations.
Travellers are advised to stay informed through local media, avoid large
gatherings where violence could potentially break out, and follow the
instructions of local authorities and security forces.
Political reaction in Berlin
The incident has also prompted reactions at the
highest political level in Germany. Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed concern
over the fatal shooting and the broader developments in the United States.
Speaking in Hamburg, he described recent reports as worrying and stressed the
importance of clarifying whether the use of lethal force was necessary and
whether officers were facing an immediate threat.
Merz underlined that, from his perspective, the level
of violence reported in connection with such incidents is a cause for concern,
while emphasizing that responsibility for clarifying the circumstances lies
with U.S. authorities.
Background to the warning
The travel alert follows the death of a 37-year-old
man who was shot and killed in Minneapolis during a federal enforcement
operation, marking the city’s second fatal shooting of a U.S. citizen by
federal agents this month. While the U.S. government has described the incident
as self-defence, video footage circulating online has fuelled public debate and
contributed to heightened tensions and protests.
Germany’s advisory does not discourage travel to the
United States but calls for heightened awareness and caution, particularly in
urban areas affected by demonstrations and public-order incidents.
