A historic drop in immigration to the United States is sparking alarm across the hotel industry. The hospitality sector, long dependent on foreign labor, now faces deepening staff shortages that threaten to push wages higher and make travel more expensive in the years ahead.
In 2025, the country recorded negative net migration for the first time in at least fifty years, marking what the White House called a “historic turning point.” Every major metropolitan area reported declines, and analysts warn the labor market is approaching a critical juncture for industries reliant on immigrant workers.
Tourism accounted for some 15 million jobs nationwide in 2024, according to Travel Weekly, with about one-third filled by migrants. Yet legal uncertainties are weighing heavily on the workforce. Immigration law expert Stephen Yale-Loehr cautions that the full impact of falling migration has not yet materialized but could soon be felt through a sustained shortage of skilled staff.
Union groups such as Unite Here already describe acute hiring struggles. By the end of 2025, U.S. hotels employed roughly 100,000 fewer workers than the previous year. The main factors include delays and confusion over work permit renewals, leaving businesses with little choice but to stretch existing teams even thinner.
The squeeze comes at a precarious moment: more than half of hotels operate with inadequate staffing, while payroll and overhead costs keep climbing. Industry analysts forecast that price pressures and the push for automation will reshape operations in the medium term.
Beyond the hotel lobby, the consequences of declining immigration could ripple through the broader economy — constraining tourism growth, straining service industries, and weakening job creation in sectors tied to travel and hospitality.
