Elda’s Moors and Christians Festival gains International Tourist Interest status

The Spanish government has officially granted the Moors and Christians festivities in Elda the distinction of Festival of International Tourist Interest. The recognition was awarded by the State Secretariat for Tourism in acknowledgement of the festival’s long-standing tradition, cultural significance and growing international visibility.

With the new designation, the Moors and Christians celebrations of Elda become the 16th festival in the Valencian Community to receive International Tourist Interest status and the 89th across Spain.

The festival, which takes place over five days around the first Sunday in June, has evolved into one of the most important cultural events in the region, attracting thousands of visitors every year.

Centuries-old traditions at the heart of the celebration

The origins of the festivities date back to the 19th century, when local militias honoured the town’s patron saint through ceremonial arquebus salutes. Although the celebrations disappeared towards the end of that century, they were revived in 1944 and have since grown into a large-scale event deeply rooted in local identity.

Today, more than 7,000 participants take part in the festivities across nine “comparsas”, or festive groups. Some of these groups include more than 1,000 members. The Christian side is represented by the Estudiantes, Cristianos, Contrabandistas, Piratas and Zíngaros groups, while the Moorish side includes Marroquíes, Realistas, Musulmanes and Huestes del Cadí.

More than half of the participants across the different groups are women.

Music, parades and historical performances

Among the most prominent events are the Entrada de Bandas, the Children’s Parade and the Moorish and Christian parades, alongside the traditional “Embajadas”, theatrical performances inspired by 19th-century verse texts depicting the symbolic confrontation between Moors and Christians.

Festive music also plays a central role throughout the celebrations. The city’s Festive Music Competition is being held for the 38th time this year and is regarded as the longest-running event of its kind. In addition, many of the participating groups have their own original musical compositions, creating a distinctive musical heritage that accompanies the festivities.

Open-air celebration throughout the city

Beyond its historical and cultural significance, the festival is known for its open and participatory atmosphere. During the five-day celebrations, the streets of Elda fill with parades, music, open-air festivities and the traditional “cuartelillos”, social gathering spaces where residents and visitors come together to celebrate.

“The citizens of Elda have created a unique celebration that attracts thousands of visitors every year and showcases the cultural richness of our country,” said Rosario Sánchez Grau, Spain’s Secretary of State for Tourism.

The new distinction is expected to further strengthen Elda’s position as an important cultural and tourism destination within the region.
