Delta Air Lines is strengthening its long-haul fleet
with a new order for 31 additional Airbus widebody aircraft. The order
comprises 16 A330-900 and 15 A350-900 aircraft, with deliveries scheduled to
begin in 2029. The agreement combines a new incremental purchase with the
exercise of 10 existing options and includes a further 20 widebody options for
future growth.
The investment supports Delta’s long-term strategy to
expand its international network while modernising its fleet. The new widebody
aircraft will add premium capacity on medium- and long-haul routes and are
expected to deliver improvements in fuel efficiency and operating margins.
“As we grow our international footprint and prepare
our fleet to serve expanded long-haul markets, these aircraft will enhance our
capabilities and elevate our premium offerings,” said Ed Bastian, Chief
Executive Officer of Delta Air Lines. “We value our long-standing partnership
with Airbus, and with these widebody aircraft we will see long-term growth and
cost benefits for years to come.”
Fleet renewal aligned with global expansion
Delta’s fleet is undergoing a significant
transformation to support its international and premium growth strategy over
the next decade and beyond. The newly ordered widebody aircraft are intended to
play a central role in this transition, offering greater efficiency while
supporting Delta’s focus on high-quality long-haul products.
Airbus welcomed the announcement as a further
endorsement of its widebody programmes. “We are grateful for Delta’s continued
trust in Airbus products and our people,” said Robin Hayes, Chairman and CEO of
Airbus in North America. “It is a privilege to power their global growth with
the A330neo and A350, providing the flexibility and performance Delta needs to
connect more of the world.”
With this order, Delta’s A330-900 fleet will grow to
55 aircraft, while its A350 fleet will expand to 79 aircraft in total. This
figure includes 20 A350-1000 aircraft, which Delta expects to begin receiving
in early 2027.
Long-haul performance and engine partnerships
The A350’s range and performance capabilities are
enabling Delta to expand further into key long-haul markets across Asia,
Africa, the Middle East and the South Pacific. Recent or announced routes such
as Taipei, Melbourne, Hong Kong and Riyadh are already being served with the
A350.
The A330-900 aircraft will be powered by the
Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engine, which has accumulated more than four million
flight hours worldwide, including one million hours with Delta. The A350-900
will be equipped with the Trent XWB-84 EP engine, offering enhanced fuel
efficiency and extended range compared with earlier engine variants. Delta has
also entered into long-term maintenance agreements with Rolls-Royce for both
engine types.
Rob Watson, President – Civil Aerospace at
Rolls-Royce, said: “Rolls-Royce is proud to have Delta Air Lines as our largest
partner in the Americas, and we look forward to continuing to grow the fleet
with their selection of more A330neos powered by the Trent 7000 and A350-900s
powered by the Trent XWB-84 EP. This reorder underpins our shared commitment to
reliability, durability and customer success.”
Consistent premium experience on board
All new widebody aircraft joining Delta’s fleet will
feature expanded premium cabins and modern amenities. These include Delta One
Suites, Delta Premium Select and Delta Comfort, alongside Delta Main.
Passengers will also benefit from complimentary seatback entertainment via
Delta Sync, free high-speed Delta Sync Wi-Fi and enhanced food and beverage
offerings.
The order remains within Delta’s previously announced
capital expenditure and capacity plans. With the commitments confirmed, Delta
currently has 232 narrowbody and 85 widebody aircraft on firm order for
delivery in the coming years.
