As it closed its centennial year, Delta Air Lines
reported tangible progress on its sustainability agenda in 2025. Across fleet
renewal, day-to-day operations and fuel strategy, the airline advanced key
measures aimed at reducing emissions while delivering significant cost savings.
Fleet investments focus on efficiency and future
technologies
In 2025, Delta expanded its investments in
next-generation aircraft, combining near-term efficiency gains with long-term
innovation. The airline is on track to take delivery of more than 35 new
aircraft that are, on average, over 25 percent more fuel-efficient per seat
mile than the aircraft retired since 2019. In parallel, Delta strengthened
partnerships to accelerate the development of blended wing-body and
hybrid-electric aircraft concepts designed to substantially lower fuel
consumption and emissions.
Operational improvements exceed fuel-saving targets
Operational efficiency remained a key lever. Delta
exceeded its near-term fuel-saving goal by achieving more than 55 million
gallons of jet fuel savings in 2025, surpassing its one-percent reduction
target ahead of schedule. These improvements translated into annual cost
savings of more than USD 125 million and were driven by optimised flight
operations, reduced onboard weight and refined ground procedures.
Sustainable aviation fuel gains momentum
Delta also scaled the use of sustainable aviation
fuel, increasing SAF consumption by around 50 percent compared with 2024. A
milestone was reached with the first commercial-scale SAF uplift at Portland
International Airport, delivered in cooperation with industry partners. SAF
remains central to Delta’s decarbonisation strategy, offering lifecycle
emissions reductions of up to 80 percent using existing aircraft and infrastructure.
Outlook
While 2025 marked a year of concrete action, Delta
emphasised that the transition is ongoing. Continued investment in advanced
aircraft, operational efficiency and SAF is set to underpin the airline’s
long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
