Bangladesh is advancing plans to modernise and expand
its national carrier, with the government preparing to purchase 14 aircraft
from Boeing. The move is part of a broader strategy to address capacity
constraints at Biman Bangladesh Airlines and support future growth in
international travel.
A deal with the US manufacturer is expected to be
signed shortly, according to State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M.
Rashiduzzaman Millat. The decision follows high-level discussions within the
government and reflects a renewed focus on strengthening the country’s aviation
infrastructure.
Fleet expansion to meet rising demand
Biman Bangladesh Airlines currently operates around 19
aircraft on international routes, significantly below the estimated requirement
of 30 to 35 aircraft needed to meet growing passenger demand. The planned
Boeing acquisition, estimated at approximately 350 billion taka (around US$2.8
billion), is intended to close this gap and support network expansion.
In parallel, the government is also pursuing
short-term measures to increase capacity. “Initiatives have been taken to add
new aircraft within two to three months, including through leasing to increase
the fleet in the short term,” said Millat.
The long-term objective is even more ambitious:
officials are considering expanding the fleet to up to 47 aircraft by the
2034–35 fiscal year.
Mixed fleet strategy under consideration
Alongside the Boeing order, Bangladesh is holding
discussions with Airbus to potentially build a mixed fleet in the future. This
approach would provide greater operational flexibility and diversify supplier
relationships, marking a shift from earlier procurement decisions.
The current move also reflects a policy adjustment
following earlier plans under the previous administration, which had favoured
Airbus. The interim government had already initiated steps to finalise a Boeing
deal, which is now being carried forward by the new leadership.
Network development and route restoration
In addition to fleet expansion, Bangladesh is also
working to strengthen its route network. Direct flights to Tokyo are set to
resume in June, after being suspended during the tenure of the previous interim
government.
The combined focus on aircraft acquisition, leasing
options and route development highlights a comprehensive effort to reposition
Biman Bangladesh Airlines for future growth, improve connectivity and better
align capacity with rising travel demand.
