Digital travel platform Agoda has released new search
data highlighting the continued rise of solo travel among Japanese travelers.
Based on accommodation searches conducted between January 1 and December 31,
2025, compared with the same period in 2024, interest in international solo
travel increased by 11% year on year, while domestic solo travel grew by 17%.
The figures point to a steady normalization of traveling alone, both within
Japan and abroad.
Seoul leads overseas destinations
Among international destinations, Seoul ranked first
in search interest among Japanese solo travelers, followed by Bangkok, Taipei,
Hong Kong and Honolulu. These cities share several key attributes: convenient
access from Japan, a strong sense of safety and well-developed transportation
infrastructure. Such factors make them attractive options, particularly for
first-time solo travelers venturing overseas.
Seoul stands out not only for its proximity but also
for its appeal in beauty and wellness travel. The ability to combine dining,
shopping and sightseeing within short stays further enhances its popularity
among solo visitors seeking efficient yet diverse experiences.
Domestic solo travel outpaces international growth
Within Japan, solo travel demand expanded even more
rapidly than international interest. Major metropolitan areas including Tokyo,
Osaka, Fukuoka, Sapporo and Yokohama recorded the highest overall search
volumes.
At the same time, several regional cities posted
particularly strong year-on-year growth. Chiba led with an increase of 67%,
followed by Takamatsu at 62%, Okayama at 46%, Izumisano at 41% and Saitama at
40%. Many of these destinations are located near major airports or host airport
facilities themselves, suggesting they serve both as domestic getaways and as
convenient gateways for international solo travel.
Takamatsu and Okayama, in particular, combine
accessibility with rich tourism resources, positioning them as compelling
alternatives to larger urban centers. The data indicates growing interest in
destinations where travelers can avoid crowds and explore at their own pace,
while maintaining flexibility around flight connections.
Solo travel becomes an everyday choice
Tadashi Ikai, Senior Country Director for Japan at
Agoda, said: “In Japan, solo travel is becoming established not as a special
travel style, but as an everyday choice. Domestically, interest is growing in
regional cities, while internationally, travelers are interested in
destinations that are easy to access and offer a sense of safety and comfort
during their stay. Agoda will continue to provide accommodation options and
travel products that cater to the diverse needs of solo travelers.”
Through its platform, Agoda enables travelers to
search and book more than six million accommodations, over 130,000 flight
routes and more than 300,000 activities worldwide. Deals are available via the
Agoda mobile app and the official website.
