Asia’s seas rank among the most diverse marine
environments on the planet, attracting divers from around the world. Digital
travel platform Agoda has compiled a selection of notable diving destinations
across the region, highlighting locations where coral reefs, dramatic
underwater formations and rare marine species create exceptional experiences
beneath the surface.
As adventure travel continues to gain popularity,
scuba diving and snorkeling are increasingly becoming part of many travel
itineraries. Several of the destinations recommended by Agoda are located
within the Coral Triangle, one of the most biodiverse marine areas on Earth.
Remote reefs and extraordinary marine biodiversity
Among the standout destinations is Sipadan Island in
Malaysia, widely regarded as one of the world’s premier dive sites. The island
was formed by living coral growing on top of an extinct volcanic cone and is
surrounded by rich marine ecosystems. Divers frequently encounter sea turtles,
barracudas and reef sharks, while dramatic wall dives descend along steep
drop-offs reaching depths of around 600 meters.
Raja Ampat in Indonesia, located in the heart of the
Coral Triangle, is known for its extraordinary biodiversity. The region hosts
more than 1,500 species of fish and over 600 species of coral. Its remote
location has helped preserve largely untouched reef systems, making it one of
the most sought-after diving and snorkeling destinations in the world.
The Similan Islands in Thailand are famous for their
exceptionally clear waters and distinctive underwater rock formations. Divers
explore granite boulders, swim-through passages and coral gardens while
encountering marine species such as manta rays and whale sharks.
Protected marine parks and unique dive encounters
The Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park in the Philippines is
a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the Sulu Sea. Accessible primarily by
liveaboard boats, the protected marine area offers encounters with sharks,
manta rays and large schools of pelagic fish in a pristine environment.
Komodo National Park in Indonesia is known for strong
currents and nutrient-rich waters that support vibrant coral reefs and large
marine species. Drift dives are a highlight of the area, while the surrounding
islands are also home to the iconic Komodo dragon.
Malapascua Island in the Philippines has become
internationally known for regular sightings of thresher sharks. Divers gather
at Monad Shoal at dawn, where the sharks visit cleaning stations. The area also
offers night dives and excellent opportunities for macro photography among
colorful reef habitats.
The Andaman Islands in India provide a mix of coral
reefs, underwater cliffs and historic shipwrecks. Their clear waters and
relatively untouched marine ecosystems make them appealing destinations for
scuba diving and freediving alike.
A mysterious underwater formation in Japan
Off the coast of Yonaguni Island in Japan lies one of
the ocean’s most debated underwater formations. The Yonaguni Monument consists
of massive stone structures resembling terraces and steps. Whether the
formation is natural or man-made remains the subject of ongoing debate, but its
scale and mystery continue to attract divers from around the world.
Andrew Smith, Senior Vice President Supply at Agoda,
said: “Many travelers come to Asia for its beaches, but beneath the sea there
are ecosystems that are just as remarkable. From coral reefs to rare marine
encounters, these locations offer experiences that stay with travelers long
after the trip ends. At Agoda, we are passionate about helping travelers
discover such wonders and create unforgettable memories, with great deals
across our wide range of accommodation, flights and activities.”
Agoda currently offers access to more than six million
accommodation options worldwide, over 130,000 flight routes and more than
300,000 activities that travelers can combine within a single booking.
