A warning strike at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER)
is set to have the biggest impact on travel in Germany this week. On Wednesday,
passengers should expect widespread flight cancellations and delays. Current
estimates suggest that up to 57,000 travellers could be affected.
BER strike at the centre of disruptions
The strike at Germany’s capital airport affects a
major transport hub and is likely to significantly disrupt flight operations
throughout the day. Departures and connecting flights are particularly at risk,
as delays may cascade across the system. Many passengers may face last-minute
rebookings or the cancellation of their journeys.
Public transport strikes complicate access
At the same time, strikes in public transport are
taking place in several German regions, including North Rhine-Westphalia,
Bavaria, Hamburg, Brandenburg and Saarland. Buses, underground trains and trams
are running on limited schedules or not at all.
This situation makes it more difficult for travellers
to reach airports and railway stations, increasing the risk of delays and
missed flights.
Further strikes cannot be ruled out
In addition to the announced industrial action, there
is a risk of further strikes in the aviation sector. Some employee groups have
already signalled their willingness to take action. While no additional dates
have been confirmed, short-notice disruptions remain possible.
Allow extra time for travel
Given the current situation, travellers are advised to
allow additional time for their journeys and to check their flight and
transport status regularly. Significant disruptions are expected, particularly
for departures from Berlin and for those relying on public transport
connections.
