At a ceremony held at Frankfurt Airport, Hesse’s
Minister-President Boris Rhein christened Lufthansa’s latest Boeing 787-9
Dreamliner with the name “Frankfurt am Main.” The new long-haul aircraft is the
first in Frankfurt to feature Lufthansa’s Allegris premium cabin concept,
marking another milestone in the airline’s modernization journey.
A new era of comfort and innovation
Passengers on board the new Dreamliner can expect a completely
redesigned travel experience with enhanced comfort across all classes — from
innovative seating concepts and refined materials to cutting-edge in-flight
technology.
Carsten Spohr, CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG,
commented:
“This Boeing 787-9 represents another milestone in our
ongoing fleet renewal. I’m delighted that we can now offer Allegris to guests
at our largest hub. The new ‘Frankfurt am Main’ not only carries the name of
its home city around the world, but also symbolizes billions in investment into
the premium experience at the Frankfurt hub.”
Strengthening the bond between Hesse and Lufthansa
Boris Rhein, Minister-President of Hesse, added:
“As one of the largest employers in Hesse, Lufthansa
is a vital economic engine and a bridge between people around the world. The
partnership between Hesse and Lufthansa is built on trust and tradition. It is
an honor to christen an aircraft once again with the name ‘Frankfurt am Main’ —
a wonderful tradition that turns Lufthansa aircraft into flying ambassadors for
our cities and regions.”
Sustainable fleet expansion
By 2030, the Lufthansa Group expects to integrate 100
new long-haul aircraft into its fleet, about half of which will be stationed in
Frankfurt. The latest aircraft generation is significantly quieter and more
fuel-efficient, consuming on average only 2.5 liters of kerosene per passenger
per 100 kilometers, resulting in 25% lower CO₂ emissions compared to previous
models.
First routes and operational details
The newly christened aircraft, registered D-ABPF, has
been operating since October 9, 2025, on the Frankfurt–Toronto route.
Additional destinations such as Rio de Janeiro, Bogotá, Hyderabad, and Austin
will follow in the upcoming winter schedule.
A legacy of 65 years
The city of Frankfurt am Main and Lufthansa share a
partnership that dates back 65 years. The D-ABPF is already the seventh
aircraft to bear this name, following in the footsteps of several historic
models — including the first Lufthansa Airbus A380. The very first aircraft
named “Frankfurt” was introduced in 1960, adorning Lufthansa’s inaugural Boeing
707, symbolizing the enduring bond between the airline and its home city.
