International demand supports Germany’s inbound tourism growth

International overnight stays increased in the first half of 2026 as the GNTB sees further growth potential despite lower air capacity and a volatile market environment

Germany’s inbound tourism industry recorded modest growth in the first half of 2026 despite geopolitical uncertainty and challenging conditions in international travel markets. International overnight stays reached 36.4 million between January and June, up 0.5 per cent compared with the same period last year, according to provisional figures from the Federal Statistical Office.

Momentum strengthened towards the end of the reporting period. In June alone, international overnight stays were 1.6 per cent higher than in June 2025. Germany’s hotel sector also improved its performance, with data from MKG International showing occupancy rising by 1.2 per cent to 65.5 per cent during the first six months of the year.

Demand remains resilient despite pressure on aviation

The German National Tourist Board (GNTB) sees the results as evidence of resilient international demand at a time when geopolitical developments are affecting travel costs and air connectivity.

“Robust demand from international markets largely offset the economic impact of the conflict in the Middle East in the first half of 2026 – including higher aviation fuel and petrol prices as well as a three per cent year-on-year decline in air capacity to Germany,” says Petra Hedorfer, CEO of the GNTB.

International arrivals developed even more strongly during the first five months. According to the Federal Statistical Office, arrivals through the end of May were 1.8 per cent above the previous year’s level.

Shorter booking windows could benefit Germany

Changes in traveller behaviour may provide additional opportunities during the summer season. Findings from the GNTB Travel Industry Expert Panel indicate that customers are increasingly making safety-conscious decisions, booking at shorter notice and showing greater interest in destinations closer to home.

“At the same time, the findings of our GNTB Travel Industry Expert Panel confirm a trend towards more safety-conscious, shorter-term booking decisions and destinations closer to home,” Hedorfer says. “Germany can benefit from this during the current summer season thanks to its central location, attractive value for money and perception as a safe travel destination.”

Germany’s accessibility from major European source markets could therefore become particularly important if travellers continue to favour shorter journeys and greater flexibility.

Travel industry confidence improves for the third quarter

The outlook among international tourism professionals has brightened considerably. A preliminary evaluation of the latest GNTB Travel Industry Expert Panel shows that 46 per cent of international travel industry decision-makers currently assess their Germany business positively.

That represents an increase of 21 per cent compared with the previous quarter. Expectations for the coming months are even stronger, with 53 per cent anticipating a positive development in their Germany business over the next six months.

European appetite for travel remains high

Broader European travel sentiment also supports expectations for the second half of the year. According to the European Travel Commission’s latest Monitoring Sentiment for Intra-European Travel, published in May 2026, 81 per cent of Europeans intend to travel between June and November.

The figure is four percentage points higher than a year earlier. Combined with Germany’s improving hotel occupancy and resilient international demand, the trend provides grounds for cautious optimism that inbound tourism can build on the modest gains recorded during the first half of 2026.
